Quest Text

Information found in the home of Hendrik, the Nilfgaardian agent, indicated Ciri had entered into conflict with some witch in Velen. At first Geralt though this “witch” was Keira Metz, but he later learned Hendrik had meant a different individual, one who dwelt in Crookback Bog. So the witcher ventured into the swamps, determined to find this bog-dwelling witch and ask her about Ciri.

Additional Info

You have one tough decision to make within this quest – to free or not to free the evil spirit located in a cave southeast of The Orphans of Crookback Bog. If you free the spirit it apparently saves the children from The Orphans of Crookback Bog, but later on in the game it will kill people in Downwarren. This will cause the death of the Baron, due to effects made on his wife Anna.
Save the children, or Downwarren village, the Baron and his wife. It’s your choice…

Walkthrough

Following contains quest spoilers. You’ve been warned

Read “The Laides of the Wood”

Open your inventory and read the book from the quest item tab.

Follow the Trail of Treats using your Witcher Senses.

Go to the hut and talk to the boy.

Find a way to lure Gran away from the hut.

Ask the children in the swamp village about Johnny.

If you talk with the children they will eventually help you lure Gran away from the hut, but you have to do something for them first…

Find the hidden children using your Witcher Senses.

Following the trails left by children, you’ll end up finding them. They’re hidden all over the village, usually in bushes and/or behind houses/trees. Completing this objective also allows you to talk to the boy.

Look for Johnny in the swamp using your Witcher Senses.

Johnny is hiding in the small cave northeast from The Orphans of Crookback Bog.

Follow Johny and defeat the monsters.

Search the raven nest.

Take the Sealed bottle from the raven nest and give it to Johnny.

Follow Johnny to the swamp village.

This objective ends once you talk to Gran and she agrees to help you.

Talk to the ealdorman of Downwarren about the village’s problem.

Downwarren is located just north of The Orphans of Crookback Bog.

Find out what’s killing villagers from Downwarren.

To complete this objective, you need to find the cave entrance and go through it. It is located just next to the Place of Power. The next objective starts at the end of the cave.

Explore the Cave.

Choice 1

I don’t believe you.

This is where you kill this creature and complete the quest faster.
Choice 2

I’ll help you

This choice gives you another side quest called “The Whispering Hillock”. The next two steps come after you complete this quest.
Choice 1

Start the ritual.

This step allows you to free the spirit.
Choice 2

Trick the being in the tree and destroy it.

This is where you “almost” perform the entire ritual. The being is betrayed and defeated without combat.
Choice 3

Actually, I’m going to kill you.

This is where you engage in combat with it, and have to fight it to win.
Choice 3

Gotta think this over.

This choice gives you more time to think about it.

Tell the ealdorman of Downwarren you took care of the problem.

This is the last objective. It ends with a long cutscene where you can play as Ciri.
