Valheim Windmill & Spinning Wheel

The Windmill and Spinning Wheel in Valheim are objects that you can craft, and they turn certain plants into useful ingredients and crafting materials. However, the issue is that crafting the Spinning Wheel and Windmill is quite the journey; they require you build a specific object first, and then gather extra ingredients on top of that. Once that’s out of the way, you need to know how to use them. If you’re stuck on any of these points, then our Valheim Windmill & Spinning Wheel guide is the right place to look.

Valheim Windmill

To make a Windmill in Valheim, you first need to craft an Artisan Table, which we cover in detail in our Artisan Table and Blast Furnace guide. Long story short, for the Artisan Table, you need two Dragon Tear and ten Wood. The tear drops from the Mountain boss Moder, after you summon her with Dragon Eggs and then defeat her. As for the Windmill itself, on top of the table, you’ll also need:

  • 20 Stone
  • 30 Wood
  • 30 Iron Nails

Mind you, the recipe for the Windmill won’t necessarily unlock automatically after you make the Artisan Table. Rather, you need to have made (or discovered, if you will) all the necessary materials first. More on that in the final segment.

Spinning Wheel Valheim

The Spinning Wheel in Valheim, much like the Windmill, is a craftable object that you can make only after first obtaining the Artisan Table. It makes sense that both of these are locked behind the fourth boss, because they do make extremely useful stuff, but more about that in a second. Before that, here’s what else you’ll need to build the Spinning Wheel:

  • 20 Fine Wood
  • 10 Iron Nails
  • 5 Leather Scraps

Once again, as is the case with the Windmill and everything else in the game, the crafting recipe for the Spinning Wheel won’t become available immediately after you get the Artisan Table. You need to have come into contact with all the elements first; nails, wood and scraps.

What Goes into the Windmill?

Barley goes in the Windmill in Valheim. Putting Barley into the Windmill gives you Barley Flour, which is an ingredient in several cooking recipes. For example, it allows you to make Blood Pudding, Bread, Lox Meat Pie, etc. As for the Spinning Wheel, you put Flax in it and out comes Linen, which is also an extremely useful crafting material, used in Padded Armor, several items made of black metal, and more. If you don’t know how these two plants work in the game, check out our Valheim Flax and Barley guide. You want to get a handle on that stuff, especially in the later stages of the game.

Can’t Build Windmill in Valheim

If you can’t build a Windmill in Valheim, or Spinning Wheel, after making the Artisan Table, that might not be a bug. Instead, you might not have discovered all of the necessary crafting materials. The table itself is not enough; you need to have also come into contact with Wood, Stone, and Iron Nails / Fine Wood, Leather Scraps, Iron Nails. I assume you’ve used Wood and Stone by now, but you might not have crafted Iron Nails. You need at least one Iron Ingot and a Forge to make them. Once you’ve “touched” all the necessary prerequisites for the Windmill / Spinning Wheel / whatever, that’s when the recipe will unlock.
