How to Fix Starfield Stuttering, Frame Drops, and Poor Performance Issues

Before we jump with possible solutions, a fair warning. Bethesda is notorious for releasing games in less-than-ideal states. Their games are massive, complex, and expansive, with a lot of factors happening simultaneously. And now, with Starfield, players will be able to explore the whole planets and solar systems. Hence, no matter what you try, ultimately, we will have to wait for Bethesda to further polish and optimize the game with future patches. However, until then, here are some basic things you can do in order to potentially make your experience better.

Check Starfield PC System Requirements

The first misstep numerous players make is to set graphics settings way beyond what their PC gear can reasonably handle. Being the first next-gen RPG from Bethesda, Starfield is a pretty demanding game, and it will take its toll on your PC. Thus, check out the requirements and select your display settings accordingly. Be sensible, and you will avoid many issues, such as Starfield’s poor performance, stuttering and frame drops.

  • Minimum System Requirements
    • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel Core i7-6800K
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700, NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti
    • DirectX: Version 12
    • Storage: 125 GB available space
    • Additional Notes: SSD Required
  • Recommended System Requirements
    • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, Intel i5-10600K
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
    • DirectX: Version 12
    • Storage: 125 GB available space
    • Additional Notes: SSD Required
Update GPU Drivers

Ensure that you have the latest drivers for your GPU installed. Playing with outdated drivers may cause conflicts and errors, which will, in turn, result in Starfield’s poor performance. Download the newest updates either via your official GPU app, or through the links below:

Turn off Overlays and Unnecessary 3rd-Party Apps

An average PC usually runs numerous third-party apps in the background while you play games. This is detrimental to your gaming experience and Starfield’s performance. These apps utilise the PC’s limited resources, which can otherwise be used for gaming. Additionally, they can cause various unforeseen conflicts with the game. The same is true for many overlays, such as Discord, Steam, NVIDIA, Radeon, and others. Make sure to turn off all unneeded apps during your gaming sessions. This should improve Starfield’s performance.

Verify Integrity of Starfield Game Files

In a lot of cases, the problem with Starfield stuttering is caused by missing or corrupted files. To thwart that, verify the game files on Steam:

  • Right-click on Starfield in your Steam library.
  • Select “Properties…”.
  • Select the “Local Files” tab.
  • Click on the ” Verify integrity of game files..”.
  • Let Steam do its work.
  • When complete, restart your PC.
  • Launch Steam, and startStarfield.
