Red Dead 2 Online ERR_GFX_STATE Error Solution
ERR_GFX_STATE error in Red Dead Online is a bug that a number of people have been encountering. The error causes the game to crash a few minutes after booting the game, frustrating players quite a bit. Nothing worse than an error that gives you some hope that it went away. Fortunately, though, there’s a solution for it. So, we’re going to show you how to fix Red Dead 2 Online ERR_GFX_STATE error in this guide.
How to Fix ERR_GFX_STATE Error in Red Dead Online?
To fix the ERR_GFX_STATE error in Red Dead Online, the first thing you should attempt is to log out of the Rockstar launcher, and log back in. Try going back into the game and see what happens. Of course, this method might not work out, but you gotta try the simple solutions first. If this method does not work, you’re gonna have to go looking under the hood, so it’s best to try the old turn-off-and-turn-on-again system first. It has worked for some people, so it might for you, too.
What can you do if logging out and back into the launcher, you ask. Well, you can try to go into Documents, and find the Rockstar Games folder. Inside, you should find the Red Dead Redemption 2 folder, so open it, then go into Settings. Go ahead and delete all the graphic cache files, aka all the files that begin with sga_. So, once again for the cheap seats in the back: go to Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\, and get rid of all files that begin with sga_. This seems to work for most people, us included.
If you have a different solution for the ERR_GFX_STATE bug in Red Dead Online, by all means, share with us in the comments. The two methods we mentioned above might not be universal, so there’s a chance you’ll help somebody else out. Just, you know, be civil about it, ‘kay? Cool.

Change from Vulkan to Direct X 12
I think this issue resonates from using Vulkan, those cache files suggested to us that we delete all have vulkan in their name.
Not really.
Was using the Direct X 12 API for a long time after I got that error back when I was in Chapter 2, just got that error again in Chapter 5 and thus am unable to continue the storyline. About to switch over to Vulkan to see if it fixes anything but I highly doubt it.
Try just updating your graphics card driver as well, that solved the issue for me.

Stop linking this. It doesn’t fix the issue and Rockstar’s been to lazy to address it
is not helping everything they have said to do doesn’t work and i have been playing RDR2 since it was released on PC with out issues until January 20201 on 1080 GTX Geforce with a ryzen 7
Just wanted to say thank you very much dude, Your method had been the only one that has worked for me so far, thats after hours of other peoples theorys, Be honest didnt think it was gonna work, eve if it crashes again least im one step closer, thanks again partner
Happy we could help, pardner!
None of these fixes have worked for me. I have wasted hours trying to get this game to work again.
The only thing that worked for me was to go back to the 441.34 driver.
Clear your local Rockstar Games Launcher profile details
Start the Rockstar Games Launcher
Select Settings
Select Account Information
Select Delete Local Profile
Note: This will remove all profile details from your local machine and require you to sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher again. It will not delete your Social Club account or any saved games. Signing in to Social Club will recreate your local profile.
5. Select Confirm 6. Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher again 7. Launch Red Dead Redemption 2
This didn’t work for me I’m afraid ?
this worked a charm, was trying all the solutions and happened to stumble on your comment. Thank you sir!
Or you can just start singleplayer first and go to multiplayer then. Works 100% of the times.

Neither solution is working for me. I have managed to play for 60Hrs with no problems.., but the moonshiners update has caused it to crash and I can’t seem to find a solution. I have tried to send Rockstar a msg.., but it won’t allow that saying that one of the parameters is missing. (Its not) Any other help would be great.
Cheers Gary
Hi there
since the new Patch 1.15 i had this GFX_STATE_ERROR as well. Onky deleting the files in the Settings Folder didn`t help.
My solution: Delete the Files in the Settings Folder, Start RDR2, go to Settings (Graphics), switch to Direct X12 in the advanced Settings, restart the game, load save.
This is what worked for me for now. Maybe costs some fps as vulkan is a bit better but at least it works.
Let´s see if rockstar can fix it and i switch back to vulkan i guess…
kind regards, Hannes
This worked for me
This worked for me. Going into settings BEFORE launching the Story mode in Single Player, down to Graphics setttings, UNLOCK the Advanced settings, and changed form Vulkan to DX12.
Restarted, the game loads.
IN game, went to Settings, changed back to Vulkan, restarted, game loads..
This worked for me. At main menu in-game, went to advanced settings under graphics and switched from Vulkan -> DX12, restart, and play and the game loaded fine. Running Nvidia 1080 and Intel i5. Not sure why it started bugging though as I played several hours with no issues beforehand.

Worked for me, thanks a ton!
This is not a solution. The files will back and one of them called: sga_vulkan_final_init.vkPipelineCacheWindows is growing (in MB) during game(checked on my second screen). So I think the problem is in this file. Maybe it can’t be bigger than some value.
Err_gfx_state
I have no setting folder under Documents for Rdr2
I can’t launch the game
I don’t have geforce experience ( uses resources)
I play many other games (no prob)
I have gtx590 graphics card which I have seen rdr2 played on and benchmarked
The game is a pre purchase
Thanks a lot 🙂
