Red Dead Redemption 2 Hands On Previews Are Very Positive

A bunch of journalists recently got the chance to play through a couple of hours of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s upcoming Wild West open world game. They’ve now published their impressions, and to say they are positive would be an understatement. Some merely liked it, others couldn’t contain their erections, while others still already see they’re going to spend the rest of their lives playing it. Scroll down for links and some choice quotes.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Hands On Previews Are Very Positive

For example, Samit Sarkar at Polygon praised the game for its attention to detail, saying that “the subtle ways in which the developers at Rockstar Studios make this Wild West world feel truly alive combine to produce a game with a potentially unprecedented scope and verisimilitude. In other words, Rockstar looks to be raising the bar yet again for the genre it essentially invented a decade and a half ago with Grand Theft Auto 3.”

On the other hand, Christopher Hootan at the Independent had nothing but praise for the game’s attention to detail. He said that “Rockstar has created not so much an open-world game as an open-life one, where you live as your character”, while also noting that “the gap between game and gamer has never felt so thin.”

There were dissenting opinions, of course. For instance, Joe Skrebels of IGN couldn’t help but praise the game’s attention to detail, claiming “it focuses directly on that idea of depth being what keeps you around, and polishes each of its systems to a level that, even after such a relatively short time with the game, feels frankly unmatchable by most of Rockstar’s peers”.

Then there’s Venturebeat‘s Dean Takahashi, who was in awe of the game’s attention to detail after it let him shoot a dog, exclaiming that it turned out to be his “window into how far Rockstar is pushing forward the boundaries of what video games can be when it comes to immersive gameplay and complex storytelling in open worlds”.
