Data Miners Discover Red Dead Redemption 2 Easter Egg in GTA Online

Arguably the most important part of the Doomsday Heist update for GTA Online is the jetpack. The new heists, weapons and vehicles are nice and all, but the jetpack is where it’s at. Behind the scenes, though, there’s also a Red Dead Redemption 2 easter egg, a secret mission with a unique weapon at the end. It was discovered by data miners from the Chiliad Mystery Guru group, after diging through some update files.

It all started with assets for a golden revolver, a mysterious case and a note talking about a cursed family heirloom. Turns out it’s all part of a scavenger hunt. The secret mission starts when you receive an email with a photo. It urges you to go to the place pictured on the photo. After you take a picture of it, you get your next clue. You have to visit twenty locations in order to finally get to the treasure’s location.

Once you’ve dug it out, it turns out to be a gold-plated revolver, double-action as well. It’s great looking gun, but what’s even better is how it ties in with Red Dead Redemption 2. Once you’ve got it, you’ll unlock a challenge. It will ask you to score fifty headshots with the new weapon. Once you do, you’ll receive a bonus weapon in RDR2, once it’s released. We presume the weapon will be tied to your Rockstar account. It probably won’t be complete junk, since the treasure hunt isn’t really easy to do.

Since there’s no word of a PC version of RDR2, players on that platform can only look forward to the golden gun in GTA Online. On the other hand, maybe this was a sneaky way for Rockstart to announce that their upcoming Grand Theft Horse will actually hit PC. One can hope.
