Deleted Tweet From PlayStation Hints at 2020 Overwatch 2 Release
Overwatch 2 was announced during BlizzCon 2019 and it ended as one of the biggest BlizzCon 2019 news, alongside Diablo 4. After the announcement, Blizzard explained that all new content will also be available for owners of the first game. This created somewhat of a fuss online (why simply not sell Overwatch 2 as an expansion) for a while. But Blizzard ensured players that the game is a full sequel. As is the case with every Blizzard game, there was no talk about the release date. The game will be released when ready, not a moment sooner. Jeff Caplan, Overwatch 2 game director hinted that the title won’t come soon. But a recent Tweet from the official PlayStation Brazil Twitter account reads otherwise.
Overwatch 2 could land in 2020
The tweet in question was spotted by a Brazilian gaming site called Voxel. The site found and took a screenshot of the tweet, and they did a hell of a job. Soon after the tweet was published, it was deleted, creating theories. The tweet reads “2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4.” That sentence is pretty clear. But at the moment, no one knows for sure what happened. The article linked at the end of the tweet doesn’t mention release date at all. So, is it possible for the game to come this year?
It isn’t usual for Blizzard to let its partners unveil the release date of their games. Next, when they say the game is still in the early stages of development, that means multiple years until release. And finally, it seems unlikely for Overwatch 2 to come to the current-gen consoles. Blizzard promised that all owners of the original game will have access to every piece of new content; maps, characters, and game modes will come to the first game. The company also mentioned the two games should merge clients at some points.
That could mean that Blizzard simply wants all players to have access to the same content, no matter which console they own. Next-gen console owners (and PC players) will get the new game, with everyone else being able to experience new content. Whatever’s the case, chances are we won’t see Overwatch 2 this year. But who knows, maybe it lands before the end of the year, its release synced with the arrival of next-gen consoles.
