The new Spiderman game will be on PS4 later this year
Insomniac Games have taken on the latest Spider-Man release for PS4, as was seen at E3 2016. Everyone’s favorite friendly neighbor will appear in an original story that is not tied to any films or comic books.
Vice president of Marvel’s Digital Media Group, Ryan Penagos recently announced that the release for the PS4 exclusive game is some time in 2017. Since the Marvel/Sony joint movie effort, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is scheduled for July 7, 2017, it is to be expected that the game will follow suit, but nothing is final as of yet. The film will feature the new face of Spiderman, Tom Holland, while Marvel’s first and probably biggest star, Robert Downey Jr. will also appear as Tony Stark. In what is probably the greatest case of movie irony recently, we will be seeing Michael Keaton in the role of the Vulture, after recently starring in the Birdman as an aging actor haunted by his previous superhero role.
Insomniac Games is familiar to gamers due to their previous work on the Ratchet and Clank games that have been Sony exclusives. However, the studio has also done Sunset Overdrive as an exclusive for Microsoft’s Xbox One. Insomniac has been a fiercely independent studio since its inception and it is no wonder that they are now “switching allegiances” once again. Spider-Man games have been generally hit and miss. It is difficult to say what to expect, although recent ventures suggest an open-world affair, as it fits well with Spider-Man’s ability to traverse large areas with his web-slinging abilities.
Marvel has more games up its sleeve in the coming months. One of the notable ones is the Guardians of the Galaxy by Telltale Games. Unfortunately, the game will not feature voice talent from the movies. However, this does not mean that the talent is not there, lead by Nolan North.
