Spelunky 2 Lag on Playstation 4 - Online Multiplayer Unplayable
Spelunky 2 has just been released on Playstation 4, and while everyone seems to be enjoying the single player campaign in this roguelike platformer, the multiplayer isn’t getting much approval from PS4 owners. The game seems to be plagued by horrendous lagging and FPS drops when playing online, which makes it far from the experience everyone expected. Thankfully, the developers have acknowledged the problem and are working on a solution as we speak.
One member of the dev team has confirmed in a Reddit thread that they’re aware of the problem and are working on a fix. The issues doesn’t seem to affect everyone – a number of people have experienced no lag and have been playing seamless coop over the Internet – but those affect get severe lag when trying to play with others.
The game uses its own servers, which means it’s not an error on Sony’s part. They only use PSN for invites – which kinda makes you wonder why you’re required to have a Playstation Plus subscription in order to play it, since Sony has no part in maintenance and upkeep, but hey, that’s console ecosystems for you.
In any case, you will have to make do with the singleplayer for the time being. There’s no telling how long it might take for the fix to appear, so don’t hold your breath. Thankfully, you can spend hundreds of hours without even touching the multiplayer part of the game, and if the first one is anything to go by, you’ll have loads of fun. According to the reviews, it’s one hell of a romp, with thoughful and deliberate changes to the established formula – ones that aren’t groundbreaking, but will make the game feel new and fresh to those who have played the previous one extensively.
