How To Build FOB | MGSV: The Phantom Pain

FOBs are outposts of Mother Base. They are separate from the central base, although the resources and staff are from a shared pool.

They bring more income, let you have more dispatch teams, but can be raided by other players. Unlike Mother Base, others can attack them at any time, stealing your resources and personnel. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to build FOBs, and when the option unlocks. For more info on Forward Operating Bases, visit our FOB guide.

When Do FOBs Unlock

You won’t be able to build your first FOB until you finish Mission 22: Retake The Platform. When you start one of the missions before it, you’ll get an urgent call from Mother Base, saying it has been invaded. You’ll have to abort your current task and go back home. The new mission will require you to eliminate the commander of the invading team (either kill or extract him).

How To Build FOBs

When that is done, you’ll gain access to the FOB building part. When you go to Base Facilities from the iDroid menu, you’ll see a new tab called FOB1. This is where you purchase property (ocean plots). These are bought using MB Coins, but you get the first one for free.

The FOB will start out just like Mother Base did – with just a Command Platform. You can then build further platforms using GMP and other resources, assign staff to the outpost and place security devices. You won’t need MB Coins to expand and upgrade a FOB, only to buy it.

If you’re not happy with the place you’ve chosen, you can relocate an existing FOB using MB Coins, but at that point, you should just save up and buy another one.

Can I choose which staff are assigned to an FOB Base? I certainly don’t want to lose an S+ Soldier just because someone took him during an FOB raid.

This may have been covered already and I didn’t see it but I have 2 questions regarding FOBs: 1. Are they only for on-line use (I understand that the single player mode can reap some of the benefits) and 2. Do I really need them?!

For those wondering, yes, there are single player benefits to having an FOB, far beyond the resource deposits in that ocean. The maximum amount of staff one can have on Mother Base is 700, it is increased by the same amount per FOB in your name. That means one can have higher level units than is possible with just Mother Base. It’s in your best interest to establish the one FOB you can get for free. My advice on the ocean to get? The Indian Ocean has an S in fuel, bio, and common metals, but no minor or precious metals, or there is the North Pacific Ocean, where the deposits are C, C, C, B, and A in the Fuel, Bio, Common M., Minor M., and Precious M. respectively. There cost is 1200 and 1000 MB Coins respectively.
