The first time you have the possibility of killing Merwin is during the Underworld chapter. One character will have the option to quieten Merwin down by putting a hand over his mouth. This can suffocate and kill him. You must not press the QTE so much that it kills him. Instead, keep him alive and continue.

A little later you hit a fork in the road. The choice is between the riskier path and the easier one. Take the easier route to keep Merwin alive.

Later, Merwin will come round and start to get some fire in his belly. He will tell you to leave him behind, and that he can take down the monsters himself. For this option, you need to select “Never leave a man behind” and take Merwin with you.

When you get to “The Signal” Merwin will be alive. He will repair the radio for you, and you will get the achievement. Not long after this, he will meet his grisly demise. Keep in mind there are also many achievements for having characters die during the game. This means you will have to complete multiple playthroughs to get all the achievements the game has to offer.
