Can You Revisit Old Areas in God of War?

Short answer: Yes, you can! The developers have absolutely delivered on their promise of a more open world to explore in God of War. And, in that vein, you can revisit areas that you’ve already explored at any time (provided you’re in the appropriate realm, of course). By now, you’ve probably noticed that there are multiple chests and other things in God of War that you don’t have access to immediately. It would be silly for the devs to not allow you to come back for that loot.

How to Revisit Areas in God of War – Fast Travel

There are several ways that you can revisit areas in God of War. The first way is the most obvious: going on foot / by boat. You can freely explore the world to your heart’s content. The second is fast travel. However, this won’t truly unlock until you push further into the game.

Initially, fast travel will only be able to get you to the Temple of Tyr. Later on, proper fast travel between all Mystic Gates will become available. Listen to what Brok has to tell you; he’ll let you know when full fast travel unlocks. To fast travel in God of War, you have to approach and activate one of the Mystic Gates. The first one you’ll encounter is in Temple of Tyr, and Brok will explain how they work. Then, you choose where you want to go. Kratos will then step into the realm between realms, and you can walk around or sit still for a while until the next gate opens, transporting you to where you wanted to go.

Given the fact that you need certain powers to open different chests and solve some puzzles, and that different areas of the Lake of Nine unlock as you push through the story, my advice is to complete the main story before you go into full exploration mode. Sure, you can explore even before that, but it’s easier if you have everything you need on hand. Plus, having the option to fast travel in God of War as you please makes things so much easier.
