Final Fantasy XVI Awakening Trailer Shows Off Gameplay Footage, Story

It’s been almost four years since the last numbered Final Fantasy game. Sure, fans had that remake of Final Fantasy VII, or at least, the first enormous episode of it. However, what the gaming world is missing is a fresh, new take on the formula. Well, the wait is steadily becoming shorter. And, if the Final Fantasy XVI Awakening trailer is anything to go by, the wait is going to be worth it, though long it may be.

Of course, a trailer is just a slice of what the game is going to have to offer. That said, FFXVI has all the makings of a Final Fantasy games. There’s monster, gigantic godlike beings, very serious anime people that are renegade soldiers, and a completely incomprehensible vernacular. Something about Mother Crystals, Shiva’s Dominant, and also there’s a boy who’s a phoenix. Oh, and chocobos, let’s not forget about chocobos! The combat sticks to the FFXV formula, which I especially like.

Now, before you get too excited, I have to rain on your parade a little. According to the game’s director Hiroshi Takai, it’s gonna be a solid while before we see Final Fantasy XVI. That’s why there isn’t even a launch window in the trailer. As the director wrote on PlayStation Blog: “…though we’re pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands. However, I promise it will be worth the wait!”

With all that said, I do have a bit more bad news for some of you. At the very end of the trailer, we find out that Final Fantasy XVI is going to be a timed exclusive on the PlayStation 5. It doesn’t say for how long, but I’m gonna go ahead and assume it’ll be one year. That’s how it usually goes. So, keep that in mind. In the meantime, take a gander at the Final Fantasy XVI Awakening trailer to whet your appetite and get a taste of the darker atmosphere.
