Is Dragon's Dogma 2 a Sequel or a Prequel?
The release date of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is almost here, and while there are many questions and mysteries surrounding the game, the one on every player’s mind – is Dragon’s Dogma 2 a sequel or a prequel to Dragon’s Dogma 1? This is a very good question, one that can totally recontextualize the entire game. Not to mention, answer whether or not you absolutely need to have played the original in order to understand the events, characters, and lore of Dragon’s Dogma 2. So let’s try and answer what DD2 is – a sequel, or a prequel to the original.
Is Dragon’s Dogma 2 a Prequel or a Sequel?
The answer to this question is a bit complicated. If you are familiar with the lore of Dragon’s Dogma 1, then you know that the events that center around the Arisen (that is – the player character) are cyclical in nature. This basically means that Dragon’s Dogma is both a sequel and a prequel at the same time. But for the purposes of clarity, the simpler way to look at it would be to consider it a sequel. Albeit, one that isn’t directly connected to all of the events of DD1 like most sequels in a series are.
Though, we can most likely expect at least a couple of callbacks to characters and events from the first game. So if you haven’t yet played DD1 and are wondering if it is necessary to do so in order to be able to understand what DD2 is all about – no need to worry. The devs are definitely going to present everything in such a way so that both fans of the original and newcomers alike will be able to comprehend all of the ins and outs of its lore and cosmology. Still, if you are on the fence about playing Dragon’s Dogma 1 – we can’t recommend it enough. It’s a fantastic action RPG that still holds up even now, more than a decade after it was first released.
