Free Roam Transformations & Playable Characters in DBZ Kakarot
Transformation is one of the combat mechanics in Dragon Ball Z Kakarot. It allows you to temporarily upgrade characters in battle, giving them better stats but draining your HP and Ki. Some of the early footage showed us Majin Vegeta roaming the land, which made people think that these transformations will also be available in free roam. It’s hard to get a straight answer on the topic, since the game has just been released, which is why we’ve written this guide, to tell you whether DBZ Kakarot free roam transformations are possible.
Can you transform in free roam?
Sorry to be the bearer of ill news, but no, you can’t. We’ve all seen footage of various characters in free roam, and some of them made us think transformations in the open world would be possible. However, it was confirmed in a Bandai Namco stream that this particular power would be off the table out in the forests, meadows and deserts of this savage, yet beautiful land. Transformations are only available during battles.
Playable characters in DBZ Kakarot
On the upside, there are seven playable characters you’ll get to lead during the sagas of the main story, and some of them have their own free roam sections which allow you to explore the world in their shoes. Others aren’t even available as more than a specific vessel for a particular fight. Such is life. The list of characters you can play as includes:
- Goku
- Piccolo
- Gohan
- Vegeta
- Trunks
- Gotenks
- Vegito
It’s a pretty varied cast, even without transformations. Also, you could count Gotenks and Vegito as transformed characters, in a way. Admittedly, it’s not the Super Saiyan kind of way, but the Fusion Dance is nothing to scoff at and you know it.
Can you change characters at will?
During the story, you won’t be able to change characters whenever you like – you’ll get to play as one of them at a time. We still haven’t completed the game, so we don’t know whether that changes after the story ends, but we’ll keep playing and we’ll update the guide when we know more.
