Diablo 4 Data Retrieval Error Fix
The “Diablo 4 Was Unable to Retrieve the Necessary Data” error is one of the errors that has been plaguing the players’ experience since the action RPG’s launch in June 2023. The error usually appears on the PC version of the game (either Steam or Battle.net), but console players aren’t immune to it, as well. The error asks players to “please check your network connection”. Here’s what we know about the Diablo 4 Data Retrieval error and what you can do to potentially fix the issue.
How to Fix Diablo 4 Was Unable to Retrieve the Necessary Data Error
If you’ve been playing Diablo 4 since the game’s release in June 2023, you’ve probably stumbled upon many annoying errors. Truth be told, over the last six months many of them were fixed. However, many of them are still there, remerging from time to time. For example, the Diablo 4 Data Retrieval error. “I have had this crash more than 60 times in the span of 3 days. It happens in towns, most frequently in Kyovashad, or in places with high (enough) numbers of other players,” reports Battle.net user Anemos. “My network is fine, everything else on my PC works fine, Diablo 2R and Diablo 3 work fine as well as all my other games.”
The error is not strictly connected with Battle.net. When the game launched on Steam in October, many players were experiencing the same issue. “I get this error in the Diablo IV Steam version,” says e_boulanger. “Diablo IV was unable to retrieve necessary data. Please check your network connection. My network connection is fine. I can go on any site at full speed (400 MBs), Steam has no problems, and the Diablo server seems fine.”
Based on our and other people’s experience, it seems that the Diablo 4 Data Retrieval error usually appears when there’s an update. Hence, one of the possible causes is corrupted or missing game files. If the game update is not installed correctly, it may cause conflicts with the previous version of Diablo 4. Hence, the only possible solution for now is to check file integrity. Here’s how to do it:
- Right-click on Diablo 4 in your Steam library.
- Select “Properties…”.
- Select the “Local Files” tab.
- Click on the ” Verify integrity of game files..”.
- Let Steam do it’s work.
- When complete, restart your PC.
- Launch Steam, and start Diablo 4.
If you are playing Diablo 4 on Battle.net, then click on a small blue cog icon next to the “Play” button and select “Scan and repair”, and let it find any potential issues.
