Destiny 2 Steam Version Not Happening, Game Exclusive to Battle.net

We’ve known for some time now that Destiny 2 will be coming to PC, too. However, a news post by Blizzard last night revealed that the PC version of Destiny 2 will be exclusively available on Battle.net. Or the Blizzard App, or whatever it’s called these days. Even Blizzard seems to be confused about it. This means that Destiny 2 won’t be coming to Steam, Origin, or any other digital store you have the habit of using.

Destiny 2 Battle.net Exclusive

What does this mean for the players? Well, not much, to tell the truth. If you’re not a die-hard Steam fan, you won’t even notice the difference. You can use the same payment methods to buy the game, you can chat with friends, and you can even stream directly to Facebook, if you ever have the strange desire to do so. If you’re an existing Blizzard player, you’ll be able to use your Blizzard Balance to buy the game, which is neat.

There are no plans to turn Battle.net into a large storefront, according to the devs. They’re making an exception this time, but they have no “short- or long-term plans to support third-party games with Battle.net”. Customer service and game servers will be run by Bungie, aside from the stuff related to the client itself.

Why is Destiny 2 not on Steam?

Well, there’s no official statement on that matter, as you’d expect. If we had to take a wild guess, we’d say it was because Activision didn’t want Valve to take 30% off every purchase, especially when their sister company (Blizzard and Activision are under the same holding company) has a perfectly functional digital store of their own. It’s not like Destiny 2 needs the exposure of a Steam front page tab – people are going to buy it either way.
