Destiny 2 Beyond Light Will Shrink Game's Install Size

According to Destiny Engineering Director David Aldridge, Beyond Light expansion for Destiny 2 is going to radically reduce the install size of the game across all current platforms. At the time of writing, it stands at around 120GB on PlayStation 4, 95GB on PC, and 110GB or so on Xbox One. Once Beyond Light launches, the new file size should be around 30-40%. Unfortunately, it does come at a price: you will have to re-download the whole game at launch. At least they’ll give you a “generous” pre-load window beforehand.

So, how are the good people of Bungie going to achieve such a radical reduction in the install size? Well, according to the post on their blog, they’ll be changing some stuff under the hood, and removing “a significant amount of accreted ‘dead’ content.” Or, you know, content that’s not really in the game anymore, but is still in the files, causing the game’s file size to bloat. Best of all, the changes that they’re introducing will lay the foundations of a more efficient system of updating Destiny 2 to avoid a future inflation of such proportions.

Well, there’s that, and also the vaulting of a whole bunch of content. You can find the full list on the official website; you can start saying goodbye to Mars, Mercury, Titan, Io, The Farm, and The Leviathan and everything that takes place there. There’s also a bunch of other activities that are going away. But, hey, at least the Cosmodrome is coming back, along with the new content. That’s something, right?

We’ve mentioned that you’ll have to re-download the entirety of Destiny 2 before you can play Beyond Light, and that’s true, but there is a ray of hope. For one, the file size is going to be between 59 and 71GB, depending on the platform, so it won’t take as long. Also, you can begin pre-loading “in the evening of November 9, Pacific Time.” That’ll give you around ten hours or so extra time to download everything and be ready to go from minute one.
