Ashes of Ariandel is the first DLC for Dark Souls 3. It takes place in a completely new area – a snowy landscape with ruined, gothic buildings and lush forests.

Getting there might be tricky. You might be asking yourself whether you need any special items to travel there, or where exactly is the entrance. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to start Ashes of Ariandel DLC in Dark Souls 3, how to access the new area.

Where to access Ashes of Ariandel DLC

UPDATE: Here’s how to enter the Painted World of Ariandel:
  1. Defeat Decons of the Deep boss.
  2. Get the doll from the coffin.
  3. Go to the Cleansing Chapel bonfire.
  4. Talk to the new monk NPC there, twice.
  5. Accept his offer.

NOTE: Ashes of Ariandel DLC introduces new weapons and bosses like Sister Friede Boss and Father Ariandel

If the monk isn’t there, simply travel to Firelink Shrine and return. The rumors of having to start the game over in order to get to the DLC area aren’t true.

ORIGINAL TEXT: Since this is a Souls game, the DLC most certainly won’t be accessed via menu. If it’s anything like previous From Software games, you’ll have to go to a newly added location or NPC in order to enter the DLC area. You might also need a special new item in order to go there.

The developers have said nothing about it at this point, but the obvious choice would be Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. It would fit both because of the somewhat similar landscape, and the doll connection. It is presumed that Ariandel is somehow connected to Ariamis from the first game – a doll was used to access the painting then, just like a doll was used to enter Irithyll. It also corresponds to where the previous games’ DLCs started, progress-wise.

Another good candidate would be Anor Londo. Equally cold climate, lots of grandiose spaces where you could hang a painting that’s actually a portal to another world. It’s also the place where we found a set of Painting Guardian robes in Dark Souls 3.

Of course, all of this is just speculation. We’re going to learn the exact way once the DLC is out, on October 25th. We’ll update the page as soon as we know how to start the expansion, so stay tuned.
