Fishing in Animal Crossing New Horizons – How to Catch Fish

How fishing works in ACNH?

Before you make your first foray into fishing, you’ll need the appropriate equipment. Luckily, this means nothing more than a flimsy fishing rod – no baits, no hooks, nothing but the rod itself. You’ll get one during the crafting tutorial from Tom Nook. Once you’ve got it, you’ll need to find a suitable target. Fish can appear in the sea and in the rivers, so just walk around until you spot a dark shape floating in the depths.

Stand on the shore, looking towards your unaware prey, then press X to open up your inventory. Select the fishing rod and choose the “hold” option. Press A to throw the line. If it drops too far from the fish, it won’t attract its attention. Now comes the fun part (or the boring part, depending on who you ask). Wait for the fish to bite – the controller will start vibrating – then immediately press A. If your timing is correct, you’ll catch a fish.

The only issue you might have is if you start reeling the line in too soon or too late. Thankfully, that’s something you can learn to avoid consistently through practice. Just keep fishing, and you’ll slowly but certainly get better at it.

How to make a Fish Bait

Once you dig up manila clam on the shore, you’ll get a recipe that lets you craft Fish Bait. You need only one manila clam per recipe. When ever you have a problem finding a fish, just use a bait from your pocket near any pond, river or sea. It will scatter food and one fish will appear right away.
