EA says they could go back to Mass Effect at some point in the future
After a long and painful post-release period, during which the Mass Effect: Andromeda tried to save something that was perhaps unsaveable. It all ended with the development studio, Bioware Montreal, merging with another EA studio to work on Battlefront II and other games.
The game might seem a bit forgotten these days, but it is true that Andromeda failed to meet expectations. It was one trainwreck after another, as was nicely listed in a great piece of gaming journalism by Jason Schreier. Whether you liked it or not, it certainly makes a compelling argument as to why and how the latest Mass Effect failed to be the greatest as well.
Recently, there has been worried talk about the future of Mass Effect, and whether the series is gone for good. However, Patrick Soderlund, EA executive, shed some light on this particular question while at this year’s Gamescom. He is adamant that there is no reason for Mass Effect not to make a comeback. “Why not? It’s a spectacular universe, it’s a loved [series], it has a big fanbase, and it’s a game that has done a lot for EA and for BioWare.”
There are worries, however, that if they do bring the game back, it would be much of the same and that is something that Patrick would like to avoid. “What we need to be careful of, though, is whenever we bring Mass Effect back again, we have to make sure that we bring it back in a really [relevant] way, and in a fresh, exciting place.”. He goes on to state that himself and other key BioWare and Mass Effect team members are responsible for this to happen.
Even if Mass Effect happens some time in the future, it will have to wait for better days. BioWare has a mammoth project of Anthem on its hands, while there are some indications that Dragon Age 4 is in pre-production.
