Far Cry 5 Will Let You Mangle Cultists, Then Go Fishing
Ubisoft have released a new trailer for Far Cry 5, their upcoming cultist-hunting FPS. The video is eight minutes long, and it features two members of the dev team talking over some footage of the game that was already shown off at E3.
The devs in question are Marri Knadle (script writer) and Philippe Fournier (associate producer). You might recognize the footage, as it’s the “extended E3 demo”, whatever that may mean. It starts off with the player attacking a group of cultists while they torture some honest folk in a field. The player uses a tractor to run over one of them, mangling him with the farm machine attached to the front. It seems like the scene was selected purely because of the tractor, so we could admire their brilliant idea to put a farm machine in a game set in a rural farmland.
The next scene involves fishing. Whenever you feel the need to take a break, you can go fishing. It will earn you some EXP, because everything in Far Cry earns you EXP, and a fish you can probably use to craft a bigger wallet. You can also pet your dog, but oddly enough, that doesn’t seem to yield EXP.
There’s also a moment where they encounter some guys forcibly baptising some poor sod. They obviously decide to attack them, but the whole scene doesn’t really inspire confidence in the AI. A short drive later, and they’re helping Nick Rye, one of the potential companions, defend his farm from the bad guys. If there was any doubt that the AI is terrible, it’s completely gone at this point. The video’s really worth a watch, both for the cringe-inducing commentary and the surprisingly unflattering view of the game.
Far Cry 5 is going to be released on February 27th next year, on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
