Dota 2 Update Makes the Game More Accessible to Newcomers

Valve is introducing some key new features to Dota 2. They want to make the game more accessible to newcomer players. The first change is that new players will get access to a pre-approved list of twenty characters for their first twenty-five games. The other thing is that newcomers will only be paired with players that have a good behavior score. The idea is that new people will that way get a better experience in the beginning, plus, they’ll have seasoned players to help show them the ropes.

Dota 2 is a fun game, but like many popular MOBA’s, its player base is brimming with toxic people. This can easily turn away any potential new players. Another thing that can wall off new people is the wide roster of characters, which results in some pretty complex inter-player strategies. To help the newbies out, Valve has introduced several changes to the game, which should make Dota 2 more accessible.

According to a blog post on the official Dota 2 website, their plan to make Dota 2 more welcoming is two-fold. First off, new players will have access to only twenty pre-selected heroes for their first twenty-five matches. That way, they can ease into the complexities of Dota 2.

Here’s the list of heroes that newcomers will be able to play as (via Eurogamer):

  • Axe
  • Clinkz
  • Ogre Magi
  • Dragon Knight
  • Juggernaut
  • Sven
  • Zeus
  • Lich
  • Lion
  • Shadow Shaman
  • Sniper
  • Wraith King
  • Death Prophet
  • Bristleback
  • Phantom Assassin
  • Tidehunter
  • Luna
  • Jakiro
  • Viper
  • Witch Doctor

The second part of the plan is better matchmaking for the rookies. They’ll be matched only with players that have “high behavior scores”, at least initially. The idea is that this will give new people a much better social experience. Plus, they’ll have someone to slowly show them the ropes. That way, they’ll be better prepared to dive in once their time comes.
