Atari Gives a First Look at Their New Console, Ataribox
The first images of Atari’s new project, Ataribox, have been revealed. The design evokes the ancient age of gaming, with wooden elements, a ribbed design, and a raised back. Atari promises that the new console will deliver both classic and current gaming content. They haven’t released any specs yet, but the console does have an HDMI output port, as well as an SD slot and four USB ports.
In a recent newsletter, Atari has revealed several images of their first new console in many years, the Ataribox. When the console was first announced, most people figured that this is Atari’s answer to Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic Mini. The newsletter pretty much confirms this, but also teases that the Ataribox might be capable of more.
As for the console’s design, it will come in two designs: wood and red-and-black. Both feature the classic ribbed design and the raised back. However, the design with the wooden panel is the one that truly harkens back to the golden age of Atari. The red-and-black version features a glass panel, although the post suggests that both versions will give you a choice of a wood or glass panel. The console also boasts several ports: HDMI, 4x USB, and a slot for SD cards. You can check out the designs in the gallery below.
However, one quote from the newsletter is particularly eye-catching:
As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.
That pretty much confirms that the Ataribox will offer classic Atari games, like everyone expected. On the other hand, the “current gaming content” part seems to suggest that some new games might make their way to the console. Either that, or Atari is talking about their games from the more recent past. Either way, it will be interesting to see how that develops.
Atari hasn’t released any specs or games that you can expect from the Ataribox. According to the newsletter, that’s because they want to “get this right”, and are therefore only sharing bits of info here and there. WE’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
