Rain World Expansion Announced, Will Add Multiplayer
Rain World, the tough as nails metroidvania in which you play something called a slugcat, is getting an expansion. The news comes via a Kickstarter backer update. The add-on will bring new playable characters, multiplayer, new plants and animals to eat or be eaten by, and full mod support. No release date yet, sadly.
The expansion is going to introduce two new slugcats, with different abilities and characteristics. The Monk is a yellow slugcat meant for players looking for a less dangerous experience. He’s easy to make friends with, and other animals won’t attack him as much. He’s weak, but requires little in the way of sustenance. Karma gates stay open for him, as well.
The Hunter is a pink slugcat, meant for people who want more of a challenge. He’s fast and strong, but needs much more food than the default option. He can carry more spears with him, but can’t make karma flowers appear.
Each of the characters will have a unique world to play in, and the new creatures will be evenly distributed across them. If you’d like to take a look at the flora and fauna from the update, there are a bunch of GIFs in the backer update.
As for the multiplayer, it’s going to be arena-based, with up to four players pitted against each other. You’ll get to unlock over fifty rooms to fight in, and the developers are calling it the “true origin of Rain World”. The game will also be getting Steam Workshop support, along with an easy to use level editor.
Sadly, there’s no release date yet. There isn’t even a name for the expansion. The devs assure us it’s because of some “business stuff from our publisher”, so it’s only a matter of time before we know both.
