The End Is Nigh Trailer Shows Off Gameplay, Surprising Soundtrack

Tyler Glaiel and Edmund McMillen have released another trailer for The End Is Nigh, their upcoming platformer. Unlike the previous one, it focuses on gameplay more than setting the tone. It’s two minutes of footage that will show you everything you need to know about the game, basically.

It’s going to be an open world-ish kind of thing, where the 600+ levels the devs have mentioned are actually screens between which you can freely travel. Falling and crumbling platforms will reset once you leave the screen, letting you go back and try again when you fail. Death is no issue, as it will only reset the screen before letting you start over – you’ll lose only what you collected there.

The platforming looks tight and precise, which is what you’d expect from the people making it. The only real qualm I have with the game is that it sometimes doesn’t make it visually obvious what you can touch and what you can’t, especially on darker levels. There seems to be much trial and error involved – you’ll need to die in order to check whether that there was just a rock, or yes, indeed, a spike.

If you watch the trailer with the sound on, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the soundtrack. It’s Ridiculon, the band behind The Binding of Isaac music, doing their interpretations of classical works. The trail starts off with Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, then switches to Dies Irae. They’ve released two other videos which feature Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. They’ve also promised to talk about the music in more detail next week, so stay tuned.

The End is Nigh will be released on PC on July 12th. You can already preorder it, and if you own The Binding of Isaac or Closure, you’ll get 10% off.
