Sonic Mania Coming Out in August, Will Cost $20
Of the two upcoming games featuring everyone’s favorit blue hedgehog, Sonic Mania is clearly the more anticipated one. The wait is almost over, as Sega announced the game will be released on August 15th. To further sweeten the deal, they’ve revealed it’s going to be sold for $20.
They’ve also released a trailer, which is more about tugging on your heart-strings than showing off the game. It’s got some pretty sketches of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles running around turning robots into chickens, with some brief scenes of gameplay footage.
In case you’re not on a first name basis with it, you should know Sonic Mania looks like it’s going to be a proper return to series roots. It’s going to be completely 2D, with a display resolution matching the old games. A lot of zones from early games are making a return, but there’s going to be a bunch of new ones as well. You’ll get your Green Hill Zone, don’t worry.
It seems like a smart move, releasing two Sonic games practically side by side. They’re wildly different in execution, and it seems Sega’s going to cover all their bases, catering to both the nostalgic fans and those who’d like to see the series go forward.
Sonic Mania is going to be released on PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. There won’t be a physical release, which is probably one of the reasons the price is low. You can preorder it already, but since it’s a digital product and it cannot be sold out, there’s really no upside to doing this. There’s also a $70 collector’s edition, which includes physical goodies like a statue of Sonic standing on top of a Sega Genesis, or a fancy Genesis-like box, as well as a download code for the game.
