Sega wants to “revive major IPs” as part of its “Road to 2020”
The idea sounds very enticing – Sega reviving some of its older titles. The company has certain ideas regarding the future concept, one of the most important being to move to a global market more.
Sega included some of the those goals and strategies in their presentation for the end of the fiscal year. This included several major points and game names:
Packaged Games Field (example titles: Total War: Warhammer, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Football Manager 2017, and Persona 5)Digital Games Field (example titles: Puyo Puyo!! Quest, Hortensia Saga, Chain Chronicle 3, and Phantasy Star Online 2)
- Expand existing IPs and obtain new IPs for North American and European PC games
- Build revenue base by being entrusted with outsourced development
- Challenge for new IPs
- Revival of major IPs
- Effective utilization of development engines
- Create titles that will become global hits
- Establish digital marketing business
- Expand overseas publishing business
- Maintain profits through long-term operation of existing titles
- Develop next-generation titles
One of the areas where Sega plans to focus much more is to “create titles that will become global hits”. This is probably coming from their experience with Persona 5 which got rave reviews and sold very well in both North America and Europe. Sega plans to revive past IPs, utilize existing IPs, as well as create new ones. They also plan to develop the game for more platforms and regions, and aim for a global release when possible.
Sega’s sales for the previous fiscal year were great for Persona 5 and Total War: Warhammer, which helped propel the total number of units sold to 10.28 million. Next year is looking good with probably continued sales of Persona 5, Dawn of War III, as well as Endless Space 2 and Total War: Warhammer 2.
Do you have any old Sega titles you would love to see revived?
