Nintendo Switch Surpasses Estimates with 2.74 Million Shipped Units

It’s safe to say that Nintendo is back, kicking ass and taking names. The sales of both the Nintendo Switch and its games have surpassed all the numbers that Nintendo initially expected. Initially, Nintendo wanted to ship two million Switch units by the end of March. And they very much met that quota.

According to Nintendo’s earnings report for the last fiscal year, the Nintendo Switch shipped 2.74 million units and almost 5.5 million games. The largest sellers are, as you’d expect, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch. The numbers are pretty impressive; the sales of the Switch has completely overshadowed the sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One back when they launched.

Speaking of Zelda, it has been selling like crazy as well, big shocker. So far, it has shipped 3.84 million copies since it launched back in March 3rd. Out of these almost 4 million units, 2.76 million are on the Switch and 1.08 million for the Wii-U. The fact that the game was accidentally leaked on the Wii-U probably hurt the sales somewhat, but it’s probably also due to most Nintendo fans wanting to upgrade to a new console.

What’s interesting to note is that there’s more copies of Zelda sold than Switches. This is at least partially due to Nintendo initially failing to meet the demand because they didn’t expect such a rush. Another reason is that fans have hurled in droves to at least purchase the game before that ran out of stock, as well.
