Zelda Breath of the Wild How to Get Epona - Fastest Horse in BoTW
Epona is a legendary horse in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. She has been a series mainstay ever since Ocarina of Time. She’s the fastest mount in the game, and a real thrill to ride. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get Epona in Zelda Breath of the Wild & what the easiest way to do so is.
How to get best mount in Zelda Breath of The Wild
The simplest way to get Epona in the game is to scan a specific Amiibo. Specifically, you’ll need the Twilight Link Smash Bros Amiibo. Also, you have to be in the Plains of Epona to have any chance of success. Otherwise, you’ll just get a chest with, admittedly, some cool items, such as Twilight Link’s tunic.
Secret Mount – Lord of The Mountain
If you don’t know how to scan Amiibos, here’s how. Simply place it on the scanner on your controller. The scanner is on the bottom left side of the Wii-U controller. If you’re playing on the Switch, then the scanner will be on the bottom part of your right Joy-Con. It’s as easy as that.
Epona is the fastest mount in the game that can be registered in the stable. Link can attack enemies while riding and deal devastating, high-speed blows to enemies. Now, many players have been wondering whether or not you can find Epona in the game without having the Amiibo. Unfortunately, the definite answer is no.
As you probably know, mounts can die in Zelda Botw. Your horse can take damage from enemies and it will result in death. But, you can revive your mount if you visit the HORSE FAIRY and pay a fee.
Epona will be familiar to every Zelda fan. She has been Link’s loyal steed ever since he tamed her in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Since then, she appeared in Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess, every time as Link’s loyal steed.

Epona should be spawning with 5 Star stats on the board making her the most balanced of horses. She should also be easy to ride ride off the bat. Zeldas horse, Storm or the White Horse as the game calls it is the fastest horse but doesnt have Eponas stamina for the sprint. The giant horse is Ganons horse and has 0 stamina because he doesnt get tired but he is the slowest out of the three. However once he hits his top speed he will stay there and charge through like a tank. If you use the Amiibo its the only way Ive seen to get the “Official” Epona horse, However there are Spawner horses that come eerily close to Eponas look with small details thatll be off like the nost blaze being an off color or the main and they are devil to catch seeming to vanish the very Moment you look away. The solid black horse and white horses Also do this so I think the developers have done this on purpose to keep you chasing that dream. Ive found that if you keep going in and out of villages where the open plains are you are more likely to start spawning these high leveled horses. I went in and out Kakariko Village a bunch of times till finally the first Midnight spawned. Then he was “Upgraded” to the Giant horse. The only one I dont have is the “Official” Epona cause no one ever has the dang on Amiibo in stock and Im not paying 60 bucks to these money sharks on Amazon for an item that Nintendo says is only $12.95 on their site. But I have a look alike that was a beast to catch I named Autumn whos stats are 4,3,4. So they Do make the Epona look alikes have decent stats. Also for anyone wondering I just got my BotW game so I havent gotten to tear it apart all the way, but these are my observations from what Ive seen so far. I finally got it for myself as a Bday gift to me since last year I gave it and the Switch to my little bro whos an LoZ fan like me. And he gave me a hand made LoZ Ocarina that I sit and play for our horses, Lolz. Pure Love there, Ha!
Fuck amiibos. Microtransactions have no place in gaming. Stop supporting this cancer!
This article starts off by saying “the simplest way” to get Epona. What are the other ways? Is there a way to get Epona without an Amiibo? Or is this “the only way”? I’d prefer not to make Nintendo richer just to enjoy a piece of the game that should be available to anyone dropping the $60 down on the game. I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t feel the need to have toy figurines in their house to play a video game.
actually if you manage to get the stalhorse to the horse gpd spring before sunrise she will revive it and it’s Epona
You can get a Gaint horse with unlimited stamina in Taobab Grassland north Ishto Soh shrine for a side quest
The giant horse doesn’t have unlimited stamina, it has NO stamina whatsoever. It can only run at a gallop and no faster, whereas horses with even just two spurs of stamina can go beyond a gallop. Any horse can run at a gallop indefinitely, so that isn’t unique to the giant horse. The giant horse, however, cannot go any faster than a gallop, EVER, because it to has zero stamina, NOT infinite/unlimited stamina. Just wanted to point that out.
I lost Epona (didn’t register her) and when I tried to respawn her the next day, I only got a chest and some cooking ingredients. Is Epona respawning a matter of chance or have I wasted my chances?
RNG is a factor, you’ll have to be patient.
Where are these “Plains of Epona”?
it doesn’t matter you can scan her in ANYWHERE. You will always get her on your first scan of the amino. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t recommend scanning her on the great plateau as you will not be able to get her down and she will die.
so i scaned the amibo ones and got epona but then i for got to take her to register and i don’t rember where i did it but do i have to start new game to get her back? i am super far in the game but i want her in the game. did she despawn or something after i went away from her?
you have to revive her at one of the fairy fountains one in specific, not gonna spoil where but it will give you the option
If you left her somewhere then yes, she will despawn, but you simply need to rescan the amibo for her to come back, it worked for me when I accidently spawned her on top of the plateau at the start of the game.
Hahahaha my friend has a fish called cheerio and I cant believe they called her freakin horse cheerio XF
She’s not the fastest horse either, I just caught one that has 5 stars in stamina, where she only has 4.
But can you register your new horse in the stable?
There’s a 5 star stamina horse you’re required to register to complete a side quest. 5 stats are the max. So epona can, in theory, be beaten across the board. She’s good for sure, but not the best.
There’s a herd of horses that regularly spawns horses better than Epona. She is 4* across the board, while a few of the wild horses in this herd are 4 strength, 4 speed, and 5 stamina. They are objectively better than Epona, if you’re willing to take a few minutes to tame them. Epona’s only advantage over these horses is her gentle nature, and that’s something five minutes of riding around or a handful of apples will fix.
I have a horse from the plains registered that is 5 strength, 4 speed, and 5 stamina. Much better than Eponas stats
I have a horse that is 5 stars all across the board
Actually the royal horse “Zelda’s Horse” is the fastest horse
ACTUALLY, no, the white stallion isn’t, the speed is only 3, while the max for all stats is 5.
The 2 5 3 horse is the fastest
The speed of the horse actually is not the horse’s stamina. Epona is among the fastest in the game, as the fastest horse’s have 4 speed. But yes, you are right. Zelda’s horse (I named mine Cheerio) has five stamina, but Epona only has 4. So the horse you caught might have more stamina, but stamina is different than speed.
wait cheerio is such a cute name ?
You dont have to be at the plains to get epona, i got her just outside the zora town
