Now we finally now a little more. The video showcases the hybrid home/portable nature of the console and some gameplay. Nintendo has scheduled the release of the Switch for March 2017.

After quite some time of silence, we get more information about the new Nintendo Switch, a handheld/home console hybrid. The system is just as weird and fascinating as is typical for Nintendo. It can be used as a home console or a handheld device. You can use the controllers in numerous ways. By the looks of it, the Switch will have third-party support. The video also teases what looks like a new Mario game. There really is a lot to be excited about.

The Switch Console

In its handheld form, the Switch basically resembles a tablet with two controllers resembling the Wiimote on the side. However, when you slide it into a docking station, it turns into a home console. The docking station comes with an HDMI output for your screen of choice. It also doubles as a power unit and a charger for the Switch.Nintendo switch console revealThe graphical power of the Switch comes from Nvidia’s custom Tegra processor. The console comes with custom software and an updated physics engine. The console’s GPU is reportedly based on top-of-the-line GeForce cards. If this is true, the Switch games will look about as good as on the Xbox One.

The games come on game cards, much like tiny cartridges. An interesting and bold move, seeing how other consoles are trying to shun physical copies. If the game cards bypass the infamous storage issues of the Wii-U, it will be worth the trade-off.

There are some unanswered questions about the Switch. We still don’t know what the battery life of the undocked system will be and whether it will have motion and touch controls. It’s also unknown whether it will be backwards compatible with Wii-U games and peripherals and if it will have any internal storage.

The Joy-Con controller

The unique selling point of the Switch seems to be the various ways you can use the controllers. They are called Joy-Con, and each system comes with two of them. When you’re playing at home, you can attach them to the Joy-Con Grip accessory, and that turns it into a fairly standard joypad. However, you can also use the controllers without the Grip accessory. That way, you can use them much like a Wiimote without the motion controls. There’s also an option to use only one Joy-Con and give the other to a friend.Nintendo switch console reveal Joy-ConWhen you’re out and about, you slide the Joy-Con onto the sides of the Switch, and you have yourself a handheld console. If you detach them, you and a friend can still play together on the go. Not only that, two Switches can be connected via wireless, effectively providing you with a four-player experience.

Nintendo also promises a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. This one looks very much like Wii Pro controller, so the Switch can be played any way you want.

The games and third-party support

The Switch reveal video features some interesting games. It shows the system playing your usual suspects: Mario, Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind and Mario Kart. The games won’t be simple ports from the Wii-U and will sport brand new features exclusive to the Switch. The Mario game seems to be a brand new one as well, and as of now still has no title. The Switch will include Amiibo support, because of course it will.

However, the Switch will not be limited to only Nintendo games, it seems. The video prominently show game footage of NBA2K17 and Skyrim. Even though 2K Games and Bethesda have not confirmed anything yet, the prospect of third-party games is enticing to say the least. Many publishers are already aboard the Switch train, though none of them have announced any games as of now. The list includes Activision, EA, Bethesda, Capcom, Square Enix, Namco Bandai, and more.
