Don’t forget that shapes can’t share any squares. After tutorial area, puzzles become more and more difficult and in our Marsh puzzle solutions guide we’ll try to help you with screenshots and detailed explanations to solve all puzzles, activate Marsh laser and earn the Marsh trophy. In this area you’ll also open the path that leads to the boat and towards the mountain. If you need a hint for solving puzzles in other areas check our guide for all puzzle solutions in the Witness.
The greatest reward for a person playing The Witness is solving the puzzles. Using a guide to solve them should be your last resort, when you are at your wits’ end. We found ourselves in that position many times while playing this game and that is why we provide these guides. Proceed with caution because there are spoilers ahead.
Tetris puzzles Tutorial Area
There are total of 14 panels in the Tutorial area. The first 6 are pretty easy to solve, since you just have to draw a line that reflects and includes the shape. In order to proceed further you have to solve a puzzle which extends a small bridge, and lets you go to the other side of the platform.
How to get the boat in The Witness
After completing the tutorial area, go up the stairs and turn left. There are two puzzles on the locked door. Once you solve the puzzles, follow the path down the hill, then keep right and you will reach a dock with a small sign. Drawing the line on the panel will summon the boat.
Tetris red puzzles (up the stairs)
While solving these puzzles you have to keep in mind that you can rotate tetris-like shapes, rearrange their positions, and that your goal is to draw an enclosed area which contains the correct number of squares, and includes the shapes.
Tetris green puzzles
When you go down the stairs turn left, and you’ll come across a new set of puzzles. These puzzles will teach you that you can group together Tetris-like shapes, and while drawing the line, all yellow dots have to stay on the same side of the line.
How to rotate the platform
Just a little further, the path ends, and you’ll have to solve the puzzle if you want to rotate the platform and get access into the underground part of the area, and also open up a shortcut that leads towards the mountain. If you take a look at the puzzle you will spot black, blue, pink and red dots on it. Each path (catwalk) ends with a different colored hatch. Your puzzle solution has to include a shape that connects black and blue dots.
Orange puzzles and underwater rooms
Completing the set of orange panel puzzles will grant you access into the lower level. The last puzzle panel in this set is a particularly hard one. The two triangular tetris pieces that are under an angle mean that you can take them apart (in your mind) and put them together any way you like. To solve the puzzle I used those 6 yellow dots to form a 6 piece rectangle and that fit in quite nicely with the rest of the puzzle. Screenshot shows the solution for those that are stuck. In the first lower level room, under the water, there are 3 puzzles which introduce a blue dot that decreases the number of yellow dots by one. Follow the blue wire which leads you to the second room near the entrance. While solving the puzzles in the third room don’t forget that blue dot decreases the number of yellow dots only if they are in the same enclosed area.
Red Tetris Puzzles
From the third underwater room the path leads you up the stairs on a metal construction with 9 moving platforms that can be lifted up and down. When you solve the puzzles you’ll open the path that leads towards the Marsh laser.
Shortcut to the mountain
From the orange puzzles head towards the boat, then turn right after the purple cube. You will come across a small puzzle that rotates a bridge and creates a shortcuts to the mountain.
Yeah yeah, it was a tricky puzzle, but what the f*ck does it DO?!?! I cannot, for the life of me, find any response anywhere on the internet as to what the hell solving this puzzle does. How has nobody else even mentioned the fact that the purple swamp puzzle seems to do absolutely nothing noticeable? Anyone?
Agreed. Something I noticed: There are 30 units in the grid but the total yellow units number 28. This means only 2 spaces are empty. I’m trying to avoid starting a crafting project here so if this information is useful to anybody, please share the sol’n.
Solved it – Just cut out the top two corners.

It opens a new set of stairs near the moving platform at the beginning
