There has been a lot of talk about the modern controls vs classic tank controls in Tomb Raider Remastered. A lot of people hate the modern controls, but there are those that defend them, too. And after having played with both, I figured I’d throw in my two cents. In this article, I’ll give you my experience with using both tank controls and modern controls and my personal recommendation on how you should play. Let’s begin, shall we?

Modern Controls vs Classic Tank Controls in Tomb Raider Remastered – Which Should You Use?

Before we begin, whether you will play Tomb Raider I-III Remastered with modern controls or the classic tank controls will depend on personal preference. However, after testing both out for a couple of hours, I can safely say that the tank controls are superior to me. Yes, they do take some getting used to. Times have changed and games like these control in completely differently. That can be a hurdle to jump over. However, keep in mind that the early Tomb Raiders were built with these limitations in mind. It’s not about quickly traversing the level; rather, it’s about being deliberate and planning jumps carefully. If you can’t find enjoyment in it, you’re in for a bad time. I have found a certain zen quality in taking things slowly instead of running around.

So, yeah, I’d personally recommend you play Tomb Raider Remastered with the classic tank controls rather than the modern ones. I mean, if you’ve played the original, you’ll be more familiar with that scheme anyway. And if you’re experiencing these games for the first time, I recommend you try to adjust to how they were meant to be experienced, you know? And if that doesn’t work for you, then at least try out the modern controls. But I warn you, it results in moving very quickly through environments that were not built for it. Setting up precise jumps becomes more difficult by orders of magnitude and generally ends in a lot of unnecessary aggravation. That has been my experience, anyway. And keep in mind, I’ve never played the originals, so I’m as new to the old Tomb Raiders as can be.
