What Paper Product Guides the Protagonists Back to Each Other In the Short Paperman
Walt Disney’s Paperman is a gorgeous little story about two young people, the pursuit of love, and destiny. During it’s six and a half minutes we follow George who is desperately trying to contact Meg, a young woman he saw on an train platform in the 1940s in New York City. It was the first animated short to win an Academy Award since “It’s Tough to Be a Bird” won back in 1970. However, while George and Meg are the main protagonists, a certain paper product is arguably even a bigger star. Which one of these is it?
- Confetti
- Maps
- Origami cranes
- Paper airplanes
The correct answer is paper airplanes! Firstly, a flying piece of paper hits Meg on the train platform. She begins to chase it. Next, the same thing happens to George. Eventually, one of George’s papers is lipstick-marked by Meg by accident, and this makes him fall in love with her. George then tries to contact her during the whole duration of the short, but unsuccessfully. Finally, he makes it in the end!
He is pushed by a swarm of paper planes into a train station and onto a train, without knowing why. At the same time, the paper plane with her lipstick mark goes after Meg, who sees it at a stall selling flowers. She recognizes the paper plane with her mark and follows it to another train station and onto another train. They finally meet when both trains stop at the same station; George is still surrounded by paper planes and Meg has his paper plane with her lipstick mark. The credits show them having a pleasant conversation at a table in a restaurant with the paper plane with her mark between them.
