BG3 Release Pixie or Keep Moonlantern
In our BG3 Release Pixie or Keep Moonlantern guide, we will be discussing whether you should keep the functional Moonlantern or free the pixie in Baldur’s Gate 3. The consequences are not exactly dire in either case, but you should be aware of them. That way, you can make an informed decision that won’t leave you stranded without a light in the shadow curse. Here’s what happens in either case.
Release Pixie or Keep Moonlantern in Baldur’s Gate 3
You should release the pixie in BG3 or Baldur’s Gate 3, because if you play your cards right, you won’t need to keep the Moonlantern. I’m getting ahead of myself, though. The first thing you need to do is inspect the lantern, after you get it during Jaheira’s side quest. You start it in the Last Light Inn by talking to her. Anyway, after you inspect the Moonlantern, you’ll learn that there’s a foulmouthed pixie in there, called Dolly Dolly Dolly. She will ask you to release her, but then you loose the light in the Moonlantern. However, if you do free the pixie, you can then ask her for help in traversing the shadow curse. Dolly will give you the Filigreed Feywild Bell. Use this item, and you’ll get a blessing that allows you to move through the shadow curse with no consequences.
And there you have it, that’s why you can release the pixie instead of keep the Moonlantern in Baldur’s Gate 3 or BG3. That said, the lantern is handy for revealing Wraiths and Shadows, so you can have it on your person for at least a while. You can always free the pixie at a later time without any consequences for Dolly. Plus, there is a way to find and fix a Broken Moonlantern, so… If you want to know how to do that, check out our BG3 Broken Moonlantern guide. By the way, Karlach and Gale will approve of you releasing Dolly. Something to keep in mind.
If you side with Minthara and collect a moon lantern from Balthazar’s room you don’t seem to get this option unfortunately
