BG3 Mirror of Loss Explained
Given its scope and size, it’s no wonder that Baldur’s Gate 3 is filled with all sorts of secrets and puzzles designed for adventerous players to stumble upon. And, being an RPG inspired by old-school games, these are often very hard to figure out. Take the Mirror of Loss as an example. You will come across this object while exploring the Gauntlet of Shar. Going by its name, size, and prominent position, one would assume that it is important. But what does it actually do? Well, that’s what we’re here to find out. In this BG3 Mirror of Loss Explained guide, we are going to go over everything that we know about the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate III.
How to Use Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3
With an imposing-sounding name like the Mirror of Loss, you would expect this object to be fairly important, at least in this location. Even more so, considering that it is so intimately connected to Shar. As the goddess of darkness, loss, night, secrets, and forgetfulness, many of her followers flock to her for help with forgetting some past trauma. This is especially evident when we take Shadowheart and her literal memory loss into consideration. But the thing is – this Mirror and its function are entirely optional content. So if you don’t want to deal with what it does, you don’t have to. But in case you do – let’s see what it does.
When you interact with the Mirror, you’ll first need to pass an Arcana check. And after that, a Religion check as well. After that, you’ll be able to sacrifice a memory for a -2 in one Ability Score, and a +2 in another Ability Score. Note that, if you don’t pass the Religion check, you’ll only get the -2 debuff. This is very useful for buffing your primary stat, and sacrificing a stat that you don’t really need all that much. After you have received your bonus and penalty, you can use the Remove Curse spell to remove the -2 penalty. And now, let’s see which memories will give you a -2, and which options will give you a +2:
- -2 Strength: “Offer up memories of your strength – times when you triumphed, thanks to your raw power.”
- -2 Dexterity: “Give up memories of your youth, when your heart was carefree and your limbs were nimble.”
- -2 Constitution: “Relinquish memories of fortitude and well-being, when body and mind held fast against all challenges.”
- -2 Intelligence: “Surrender valued knowledge gleaned from books, scrolls, and tablets… words that left a mark on your mind, but no more.”
- -2 Wisdom: “Let go of some wisdoms that time has bestowed upon you – old wounds, tough lessons, and fond memories alike.”
- -2 Charisma: “Give away memories of when your charm stood to you – the applause of the swayed, the smiles of the beguiled, the kisses of the seduced.”
- +2 Strength: “Claim memories of strength from a long-dead general, who marched under the banner of a vanished kingdom.”
- +2 Dexterity: “Help yourself to the memories of a seasoned thief’s most daring exploits.”
- +2 Constitution: “Seize the memories of a barbarian, whose mind and body were tempered against hardship.”
- +2 Intelligence: “Glean the secrets of a wizard who once stalked the libraries of Candlekeep.”
- +2 Wisdom: “Turn to the wisdom of a drow. Once of Loth, then of Shar.”
- +2 Charisma: “Warm to the guile of a bard who could charm even a dragon.”
