The torch icon is familiar to long-time players of the game. When you are at an inn, it will be at its brightest and it will ebb the further and longer you are away. It represents the mental anguish of your party. The longer they are without home comforts, the worse they become at doing their job.

When the torch is brightest, you will get some strong combat bonuses. The dimmer it gets, the more penalties you will incur, making it better for your enemies. How quickly this torch dissipates is now related to your other meter. This is loathing.

What is Loathing in Darkest Dungeon 2?

Loathing is a new mechanic that you need to keep track of. You can find it in the upper left corner of your screen. This icon measures loathing on a scale of zero to one hundred.

When you reach the inn at the end of each world, your loathing level will increase. You can keep it away by clearing the challenges marked on the map. These include lair, resistance, and cultist encounters. Usually, these can be tempting to avoid, particularly resistance encounters, so you can overcome every run. Doing this will now impact your loathing level making fights harder to finish.

Loathing can also decrease your chance of accumulating mastery points, which are in short supply at the start. As well as these encounters, you can also ensure your HP is above half and keep your relationships with others positive. Completing all three rounds of each map’s Guardian challenge will also lower loathing.
