How to Spawn Valheim Bonemass Third Boss – Cook their remains

To spawn the third boss in Valheim, Bonemass, you first have to solve “Cook their remains” hint. You need to collect ten Withered Bones. You find these in the Swamp Crypts, which you open with the Swamp Key that you get from The Elder boss. Alternatively, you can use an Iron or Bronze Pickaxe to basically mine the stairs of the Crypt, and then swim underneath to enter without ever getting the key. You know, just in case you want to be sneaky about it.

Anyways, once you get the ten Withered Bones, place them into one of your quickslots and go find the summoning altar. It’s not hard to find; it’s a giant, yawning skull that’s dribbling green smoke. Place the bones on the altar in the skull’s mouth, and that will spawn Bonemass. This is a truly formidable enemy that you have to approach very carefully. First, we’ll give you some tips, and then a comprehensive strategy.

Valheim Third Boss Bonemass Tips

When it comes to battling the Bonemass Valheim boss, no matter how you plan to approach it, there are a few items that you want to have. This includes some sort of blunt melee weapon (ideally something hammer-ish, like the Stagbreaker), Poison Resistance Mead, a good bow, and arrows (ideally, Frost). Of course, healing items will also be important.

Bonemass has several attacks. The first one is a regular melee thing. Then, there’s an AoE poison attack that you can kinda walk or dodge through, but standing in it will kill you quickly. The boss also flings globs of poison from a distance, and also summons various minions, like skeletons and blobs.

If you approach the Bonemass in Valheim via melee, use the hammer’s AoE to keep at least some distance from the monster. Dodge the poison attacks, do not linger in their AoE, and prune the other enemies as necessary. If you opt for ranged attacks, you must stock up on Frost Arrows, at least 100 of them. Keep your distance, evade the poison, keep shooting, and use your hammer to clear out the ads if they come too close. If you put in a bit more work into this, you can cheese the boss, so let’s get into that.

How to Kill Bonemass Valheim Third Boss

To kill the third boss in Valheim, Bonemass, you’ll have to prepare. First, craft at least the Stagbreaker hammer (20 Core Wood, 5 Deer Trophy, 2 Leather Scraps). Then, explore the Mountain biomes (remember to stay warm). You’re looking for Obsidian (requires at least Iron Pickaxe) and drakes, that are usually around the mountain peaks. They drop Freeze Glands; you need those, Obsidian, Feathers and Wood to craft Frost Arrows. You’ll need at least 100 of them if your Bow skill is in the forties; more if it’s lower. Plus, get some Flint or Wood arrows just for backup, and Poison Resistance Mead.

Find the summoning altar, but don’t touch it yet. Instead, approach one of the huge, indestructible trees in the vicinity. You want to build a treehouse high above, about twice the height of the Bonemass. Remember to place support beams as necessary, absolutely build a roof, and make the floor double-thick. Also, make sure to leave at least a 1×1 hole in the floor, and build a workbench inside the house to repair your bow. If you’re really cheeky, you can also put a campfire and a bed in there to rest as needed. If you build too low, and the Mass can reach or your house, you’ll be in a lot of trouble. Err on the side of caution and build as high as you can.

With all that preparation done, go down and summon the Valheim Bonemass boss, as explained above. Immediately run up to your treehouse (destroy platforms that are close to the ground if necessary. Wait for the monster to come under the whole in the floor, and then simply shoot at it with Frost Arrows until it dies. If you want to, you can open the battle by taking potshots with more regular arrows to level up your Bow and do more damage when you switch to Frost. Repair your bow and house as necessary. When the Mass dies, go down and clear out ads with the Stagbreaker. The Bonemass drops the Wishbone, a highly useful item.

    That’s overkill.
I beat him with wood arrows and troll armor. Kept circling the skull and shooting. Took 30 minutes, and my bow skill went from 40 to 50 by the end. Never died or took too much damage. Probably 500+ arrows total. I didn’t even bother killing the ads because if you keep circling they just can’t catch you, and neither does the boss, with some stamina management. (No potions of any sort, i hadn’t discovered any snow regions yet at that point, so no frost, and i didn’t bother crafting iron arrows.)
Hardest part was having to portal a couple of times to repair the bow. And the only preparation i did was flattening the ground around the skill to remove water, so i don’t get slowed down when kiting.
You don’t want to overkill the bosses, they are not that hard, and it reduces some of the epicness of the moment.
