Valheim Boat - List of All Valheim Boats & Their Prerequisites
Boats in Valheim are vehicles that allow you to traverse across water and gain access to previously unexplored areas. There are several Valheim ships that you can build, exponentially more expensive and complicated to make. Once you do manage to build a boat, then there’s the matter of figuring out how to control it. In our Valheim Boat – List of All Valheim Boats & Their Prerequisites guide, we’ll show you what you need for each ship and how to sail them.
Valheim Raft
The Raft Valheim boat is going to be the first seafaring vessel you’re going to build in the game. As Valheim ships go, it is by far the cheapest one. You’ll be able to get the materials fairly quickly. These are the requirements you have to meet:
- 20 Wood
- 6 Leather Scraps
- 10 Resin
To craft it, you’ll need a workbench nearby, of course. Take out your Hammer, then press F to go into the Misc tab. Select the Raft, and then left-click to place it into the water. For more details, check out our Valheim Raft – Controls and How to Sail in Valheim guide. We’ll go into controls here, too, at the end of the article. For now, let’s go to the next Valheim boat.
Valheim Karve
The Karve Valheim ship is an upgrade from the Raft. You’ll need a workbench nearby to place it down, like when making the raft. As for materials needed, it’s quite the jump from the caveman tech needed for the previous vessel. Here’s what you’ll need for this Valheim boat:
- 30 Fine Wood
- 10 Deer Hide
- 20 Resin
- 80 Bronze Nails.
The method of placing it into the water is the same as with rafts, pretty much. Select the Hammer, hit F to go to the Misc tab, use Q or E to highlight Karve, and then left click to put it into the water. Now for the ultimate seafaring vessel that you can make to become a true viking.
Valheim Longship
The Longship boat in Valheim is awesome, as you can see in the picture, and it is appropriately expensive. It works like an upgrade from the Karve, and you’ll have to grind materials hard before you can make it. Take a look at what you’ll need:
- 40 Fine Wood
- 10 Deer Hide
- 100 Iron Nails
- 40 Ancient Bark (drops from ancient trees in the Swamp biome)
As you might have guessed, crafting the Longship works the same as the Karve and the Raft. You need a workbench nearby. Take the hammer, go to Misc, scroll over to Longship, and left-click to place it in the water. You’re now the lord of the seas! Now, let’s break down how to control boats in Valheim.
Valheim Boat Control
Boat controls in Valheim are a little tricky to get a hang of, but nothing you won’t get a hang of. All the Valhiem ships control the same, so that’s pretty handy. By that I mean, the control schemes are the same across the board. First, the basics.
To start sailing, climb onto your boat and grab the rudder. Then, press W, and when the little rudder icon appears by the compass, the boat will start moving forward without sails. You steer the ship by pressing A and D to go left and right, respectively. To reverse, press S while holding the rudder until the icon appears again, and the vessel should start going backwards.
Now for the sailing part. To start sailing, while moving slowly with the rudder, press W once or twice until the sail comes down. Pay attention to the wind icon in the corner. If it’s white, you’re sailing with the wind. If, on the other hand, the icon is grey, you’re pointing against the wind, and won’t move. There is a way to zigzag the sail to move even against the wind, but simply rolling the sail up and going rudder-only can be the better option, depending on your circumstances.
Lastly, to stop moving, press S and / or W until you lift the sail and the rudder icon disappears from next to the compass. And that’s about all there is to it. That’s all you need to know when it comes to Valheim boats. If we’ve missed something, let us all know in the comments.
