RDR2 Online Legendary Animals Location

Legendary animals in RDR2 Online work similarly to those in story mode. They’re unique, difficult to find and even more difficult to successfully hunt down. If you only want their samples and not the pelts, you have to sedate them, which takes even longer. If you’re wondering where to find them, and which are the new ones, this guide will show you all legendary animal locations in RDR2 Online.

Legendary Animal Locations RDR2 Online

RDR2 Online legendary animals

There are seven new legendary animals that were added in update 1.20, with three subspecies. Some of them can appear from the start, while others become available only after you’ve proven yourself a naturalist. Here’s what they are:

How to find and spawn legendary animals in RDR2

We’ll update the guide with precise locations as we discover them. In the meantime, you should review your strategy and maybe get some new tools. You can now hunt animals without hurting them, which means using sedative ammo so you can collect samples. There are also new items that help you with hunting, like the legendary animal pheromones, which provoke them and make them more likely to appear when you’re in their area, and the blending tonic, which makes you harder to spot when lurking in the grass and bushes. You can buy both of these from Harriet, your new bestie.
Important Note: You should use legendary animal pheromones after you get a notification that a legendary is nearby, not before!

You’ll get an alert while riding, with typical question mark within a yellow area just like in story mode, that a legendary animal is nearby, but there is no tracking marks. When you find it a yellow paw print will show on the radar but only for a moment at a time, like a bounty that’s escaping (thanks Shawnwizzle0822).

She also sells maps which will help you find the new legendary animals. They’re a good investment, as the samples from these beasts fetch quite a price. As you rank up your Naturalist role, you’ll unlock more legendary animals – subspecies that are even more rare than their regular cousins.

Can you hunt the legendary animals more than once?

You can hunt Legendary animals more than once, but they are on cooldown. Legendary animals only spawn under certain conditions (thanks Alexionics):

  1. You’ll find Elk near Cholla Springs (Cotorra Springs) only when it’s drizzling and foggy weather.
  2. Legendary Ota Fox appears at the beginning or end of the day
  3. Legendary Marble Fox appears in the northwest of Ambarino, near the road between Cairn Lake and Spider Gorge.

Legendary Marble Fox Location in Red Dead Online

The legendary Marble fox in location in Red Dead Online is in the northwest of Ambarino. We found it near the road between Cairn Lake and Spider Gorge. Make sure to purchase some legendary animal pheromones from Harriet, so that you can increase your chances of finding it. Also, use Eagle Eye to spot it more easily, since the fox can blend in with the surroundings fairly well. For more info on legendary foxes in general, since there’s more than one variant, check out our Red Dead Online Legendary Fox – Marble, Ota, Cross Fox guide.

Legendary Wolf Locations – Moonstone, Emerald

There are several species of legendary wolves, including Moonstone and Emerald. According to player reports, they won’t spawn until you raise your naturalist rank enough. The Moonstone Wolf is particularly hard to find, and its pelt can be used to make a nice warm garment set. For more info, check out our legendary wolf location guide.

Legendary Beaver Locations – Zizi

The Legendary Zizi Beaver appears on the shores of Lake Owanjila. We found it in the northwest corner of the lake, but we do have to say that there’s a good chance that you will have to run loops around the lake until you find it. That’s what we had to do, anyway. If you want more information, head on over to our Legendary Beaver Locations guide.

Legendary Elk Locations – Ozula, Inahme, Katata

There are several kinds of legendary elk in Red Dead Online. The Ozula elk spawns in Chollo Springs, while the Inahme is tied to a quest you get from Harriet. They’re skittish, and will often try to escape when you encounter them, so it’s best to sneak around. For more info, visit our legendary elk locations guide.

Legendary Ram Locations – Chalk Horn, Gabbro Horn, Rutile Horn

There’s three different types of legendary ram in Red Dead Online, and they all have different locations. The Chalk Horn is in the north of Ambarino, east of Donner Falls. The Gabbro Horn is in the south of New Austin, in the area southeast of Fort Mercer. Lastly, the Rutile Horn is tied to one of the quests that you get from Harriet. If you want more detailed info, head over to our legendary rams locations guide.

Legendary Boar locations – Wakpa, Cogi, Icahi

As with the other animals on this list, there are three subspecies of legendary boar: Wakpa, Cogi and Icahi. Icahi is the only one tied to a quest – Wakpa can be found roaming the area southeast of Tall Trees, and Cogi is often found north of Blue Marsh. For a more detailed description and map images, consider visiting our legendary boar locations guide.

Legendary Cougar Locations – Maza, Sapa

There are several kinds of legendary cougars in RDR2 Online. The Maza cougar can be found in the area around the Sea of Corronado, and it mostly comes out at night. The Sapa cougar, on the other hand, is tied to a mission you can get from Harriet if you’re a good enough trapper. For more info about these rare predators, head over to our legendary cougar locations guide.

Legendary Gator Locations – Teca, Sun

Legendary gators in RDR2 Online can appear in several locations, depending on the type you’re after. The Legendary Teca Gator appears on the cluster of islands south of Caliga Hall and east of Bolger Glade. It appears mostly at night, and in stormy or rainy weather (we found it at 4PM, but whatever). As for the Legendary Sun Gator, it spawns in and around Lake Lagras. Normally, you can find it in the early hours of the morning, in foggy or rainy weather. For a more detailed instructions, check out our Legendary Gator Locations guide.

We’re going to keep playing and leveling up our naturalist rank, and we’ll update this guide will precise locations of legendary animals and any other pertinent info we find as we go along.

I honestly dont know why they made things like specific times and weather too.
There isn’t a single Lobby without a Cheater/Hacker who is changing daytime and weather these days.

Last Legendary i found was on release day, not a single one in free roam since that day.
Maxed it via mission only, but i dont think that was intended.

Because you have to sell Gus the legendary skin for it to be available to purchase. If you haven’t sold him any there won’t be any to purchase and therefore nothing available.

Do you have to do anything specific in the naturalist role to get these to spawn in free roam? The only legendary animals I can find are via Harriets missions – I can’t find them in the areas mentioned. Using a pheromone brings up that there are no legendary animals in the area.

You can get a sample by doing one of the free roam events related to the role. You can unlock the ability to be invited to these events by reaching naturalist Lvl 4.

The location you have published for the Legendary ELK is supposed to be Cotorra Springs NOT Cholla Springs

Cholla springs is in New Austin, Cotorra Springs is in Ambarino. These are two entirely different locations.
