Doom Eternal Won't Have Microtransactions, Says Creative Director

According to Hugo Martin, the creative director of Doom Eternal, the game is not going to feature any kind of store. Also, it would seem that there will be no microtransactions, either. Instead, you’ll have to unlock cosmetics with XP, which you earn by playing the game. The good old-fashioned way, if you will.

Were you worried about whether Doom Eternal was going to feature microtransactions for such things as cosmetics, as is standard practice with the vast majority of AAA titles? Well, worry no more. In a response to a fan’s question on Facebook (via GameSpot), the game’s creative director, Hugo Martin, put any such worries to rest. He said, pretty definitively, that there will be no store in Doom Eternal, adding: “Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or a mobile game – we are giving you a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect.”

When it comes to cosmetics, you’ll only be able to purchase them with XP, which you earn by playing the game. And even then, said cosmetics in no way impact the gameplay itself; you can ignore them completely, and your experience will remain the same. Or, as Martin puts it: “Nothing you can unlock in Eternal with XP has anything to do with player abilities or content that would impact your game in any way… Unlocking skins with XP is part of the experience if you care about that stuff, or you can completely ignore it and it and it will have no impact on your experience at all, and it’s all free.”

So, there you have it, folks. Doom Eternal is coming out on March 20th, 2020, barring any further delays. You’ll be able to pick it up on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Stadia. There’s also a Nintendo Switch version in the pipeline, also coming out in 2020. It doesn’t have a set release date as of writing, however.
