Link's Awakening Gamescom Presentation Shows Off Dungeon Editor

As is customary, Nintendo held several presentations during Gamescom, showing off their upcoming Switch titles. This year, one of them was the remake of the olden Zelda game, Link’s Awakening. We’ve already seen the game in action, but the new demo introduces some new areas, enemies and features. The most interesting of all is probably the dungeon editor, which allows you to piece together custom dungeons from premade rooms you’ve collected during your adventure.

Link’s Awakening Gamescom Presentation Shows Off Dungeon Editor

It’s a generous video, with about half an hour of footage. If you’re in a hurry and just want to see the editor, jump to the seven minute mark. It’s pretty simple and intuitive – as you play through the game and clear regular dungeons, you’ll unlock prefab rooms for the editor. When you want to create and play through a custom adventure, you’ll have to visit a certain NPCs in a certain place, and he’ll allow you to do so.

Once you start up the process, you’ll be able to piece together a dungeon from the rooms you have at your disposal. The game will check for irregularities as you build, so you won’t be able to build one that’s impossible to solve. Also, you won’t have to worry about keys and such – the game will always put the boss room key in the last chest on the floor. No matter which order you clear the rooms and open the chests in, the boss key will be awarded to you once you’ve explored everything.

Apart from that, we’ve seen a couple of smaller features that should drastically increase the quality of life, mostly by reducing the amount of time you spend fiddling with the menus. It’s turning out to be a proper remake, which is kinda rare in this day and age.
