Rocket League Removing Loot Boxes Later This Year
The loot boxes in Rocket League are going away some time later this year, according to Psyonix. Instead, they’ll introduce direct purchases. So, you’ll always know exactly what you’re buying. And, really, with microtransactions, that’s about the best it gets. There is no info on when they’ll be pulling out the loot boxes at the time of writing.
Yes, indeed; Psyonix has decided to come back into the light, and get rid of loot boxes in Rocket League. As the announcement reads: “Here at Psyonix, and Epic Games as a whole, we are dedicated to creating the best possible experience for our players all over the world. In pursuit of that goal, later this year we will remove all paid, randomized Crates from Rocket League, replacing them with a system that shows the exact items you’re buying in advance.” So, yeah; don’t be buying the loot boxes, just be patient until they leave.
They are going to keep the Rocket Pass Premium, DLC Cars, and Esports Shop. However, they’ll offer them “for direct purchase alongside our new system.” Well, you know, when it comes to microtransactions, you can’t get more fair than that. What’s interesting to note is that it seems that Epic Games stepped in to facilitate this decision. The announcement does also name-check Fortnite Save the World, whose team did this exact same thing. So, yeah, Daddy Epic seems to be the one pulling the plug on Rocket League loot boxes. That is just conjecture on my part, though.
Now, the post doesn’t mention when exactly they’re gonna be removing the loot boxes. Psyonix does promise to share more info, such as “timelines and roll-out specifics,” in the foreseeable future. Now, I’m kinda tempted to give Psyonix credit for removing the loot boxes. However, everybody would’ve been so much better off if they never introduced them in the first place. This goes double, given the fact that they added this guff post-launch. So, let’s not get too carried away.
