Now, the obvious answer to the question is to read the sourcebooks for Cyberpunk 2020. True, Cyberpunk 2077 takes place almost sixty years later, but if you want to read up on the lore and history and such, this is the most direct route. Specifically, I recommend the basic sourcebook (second edition), Night City (for the setting), all four Chromebook tomes (for the gear, cyberware, vehicles, etc), and Edgerunners Inc. (it includes various scenarios and other fun stuff). The other books are more optional, in my opinion.

Word to the wise, though: people are selling their hard copies of Cyberpunk sourcebooks for exorbitant amounts of money on Amazon and other places. Don’t go for it. Instead, you can just buy the books via the official Talsorian Games website. Alternatively, you can spend time perusing the Cyberpunk Wiki. This is a good choice, because, unlike in the books, it helps you skip over all the rules, dice rolls, tables, and other stuff that’s specific to the pen and paper game. Instead, you can just focus on whatever it is that you want to learn about, or just go down the usual Wiki rabbit hole. The Timeline page is a decent place to start.

And now, for uncle Joe’s special recommendation. If you want to get into the Cyberpunk attitude, read the Transmetropolitan comic. It’s not set in the same universe, but it does have the oppressive atmosphere, and, more importantly, a lot of punk in its Cyberpunk. Might even give you several ideas as to what kind of character you might want to roleplay as. I cannot recommend Transmetropolitan highly enough to aspiring cyberpunks.
