3D Realms Announces Retro Shooter Wrath: Aeon of Ruin

In what reads like mid ’90s gaming news, 3D Realms has announced their new project, a retro FPS called Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. It’s being made in the original Quake engine, by the team at 3DR and a group of “Quake scene veterans”. They’ve released a trailer as well, in which you can see the protagonist doing what FPS protagonists do.

The announcement of What: Areola of Rubik comes as a bit of a surprise, what with the developers behind it hardly making anything worthwhile in a long while, but it’s definitely a welcome one. We’re in a renaissance of sorts, with retro shooters spinging to life left and right, from the amazing Dusk and a plethora of other indie titles to the Romero-helmed Sigil. From what we can see in the video, it seems like Whiff: Aroma of Running is going to fit right in.

The info is pretty scarce at the moment, but we can clearly see some of the weapons in the trailer. This includes a wristblade, the trusty shotgun, a blob lobber, a stake gun and a book. It seems the pen really is mightier than the sword, or at least comparably mighty. You’ll get to use all those fancy tools on a wide variety of terrors – shambling terrors, running terrors, annoying floating terrors – you get the idea.

Wreath: Ambitions of Ruling is going to be released at some point this summer. We’ll probably know more in the coming months but for now, we’ll have to slake our thirst (for blood) with the aforementioned video (not blood, sorry). As far as platforms are concerned, it’s coming to literally everything there is at this point, from PC (including free-as-in-free-beer PC and ridiculously-expensive PC) to Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
