Mortal Kombat 11 Character Customization Will Include Skins, Gear

By the looks of things, Mortal Kombat 11 is going to be switching things around a little bit; compared to the previous two entries, at least. For example, the game will feature a relatively complex and hopefully deep customization system, going far beyond skins and other cosmetics. It’ll include extra special attacks, fatalities, taunts, AI behavior, and more. Let’s all hope they don’t drown us in microtransactions for all this stuff.

So, what are the things that you’ll be able to customize in Mortal Kombat 11? Turns out, quite a lot. We’ve got skins, costume elements, cinematics, fatalities, taunts, new special attacks, and even AI behavior. Like I said, it’s surprisingly complex. In the video, Ed Boon mentions that every fighter will have three customizable elements (aside from the skins, I assume). They used Scorpion as an example. They switched between different ninja masks (like the toothy one picture above), the katanas he carries, and his legendary kunai knife on a chain. Then, they cycle through different full looks of both Scorpion and Baraka. I wish they focused more on special attacks and fatalities, but oh well.

Now, all of this customization seems really fun and interesting (and hopefully not game-breaking). I do have some serious concerns about it, though. Why? Because it screams microtransactions to me. I can just smell them in the wind. Oh, I’m sure we’ll be able to unlock stuff in The Krypt or some similar mode. But I’m itching with fear that we’ll be able to cough up a couple of bucks to “unlock faster,” or whatever buzzword. Never forget the time when they sold easy fatalities. I really, truly hope and pray that won’t be the case. We’ll have to wait and see, I suppose. Mortal Kombat 11 is coming out on April 23rd, on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and the Switch.
