Red Dead Redemption 2 How To Keep Stolen Hats
Stolen hats are clothing items in Red Dead Redemption 2. They’re just like regular hats, except they’re obtained ilegally. After you pick up another person’s hat, it won’t always immediately appear in your wardrobe. Sometimes it seems like you have to wait a certain amount of time, or visit a camp before it’s yours for good. Our Red Dead Redemption 2 how to keep stolen hats guide shows you what the entire process actually looks like and what you need to do to keep a hat forever.
How to steal hats in RDR2?
UPDATE: There’s rumor of a workaround that lets you steal hats that aren’t usualy available for stealing. It says you need to access your wardrobe, then remove all the hats from the horse (apart from the default one, as that one cannot be removed). After you’ve done this, you need to put the hat you want to steal on your head and mount the horse. The hat is then supposed to automatically appear in your horse wheel, and in the wardrobe. We’ve tried it, but sadly, it doesn’t work.
You’ve probably already tried to steal hats with little success. You kill a man, take his hat, wear it for a while, and then it disappears instead of showing up in your wardrobe or horse menu. It’s frustrating, so a lot of people are wondering how the system works exactly. Some claim you have to wear it for a while before it’s yours, others think you have to go to a camp while wearing it in order to store it.
The truth is far more simple than that. The only hats you can steal are the ones that glow while on the ground. When you pick one up, a popup on the right side of the screen will tell you the name of the hat. It will immediately appear in your wardrobe, and in the horse inventory.
If the hat doesn’t glow, you won’t get the popup after you’ve picked it up, and it won’t be stored in your stash. The game deems hats like these too irrelevant to give them a permanent spot in your trunk. When you pick up such a hat, you’ll get a message saying it cannot be stored and will be lost if you leave it on the ground.
If you end up getting stuck at another point, you might want to check out some of the other guides we have. We've written about mysteries like the missing person Gavin, the Rhodes Gunsmith prisoner, the locked door at Valentine doctor. We also have instructional guides that show how to rob stores without getting bounty or where to sell jewelry and gold bars. If it's collectibles or key items you're after, we've found all the Penny Dreadful comic books, Chick's treasure map location, or that famous pipe for Dutch. Finally, if you don't care to explore the map yourself, you could take a look at our Watson's Cabin and Catfish Jackson's Homestead locations guides. In the latest Red Dead Online Moonshiners Update you'll have a chance to find Navy Revolver and Best Shack Locations.
So your saying that after all that pain and all those tears spent on stealing the best hat in the game from st. Denis was all a waste because the hat doesn’t even save? @rockstar please fix your mess
Dang, I’m not looking forward to losing my hat. I have another bear that from stealing it from some guy who had a bounty on him in blackwater
You’re wrong because there is a way to keep those regular hats and that is by wearing them long enough. It worked with my confederate civil war hat and one of the skinners’ hats.
The Confederate hat is one of the “glowing” hats. It’s a “found hat”. Same goes for the skinner hat. I found them both, and didn’t have to wear them at all after finding them. Because they’re supposed to be found.
Dont know if this info helps but, in the mission for getting the horses for rains fall it saved the hats i got off the army dudes, however i have consitantly tried to get the lawman hat and it wont save.
There is a work around for this. Have done it work the mining helmet (You know… the one with the light). All I did was keep it on and head back to camp. In there go to the wardrobe and pick whatever you want to wear with it (do not remove the hat at this point). When satisfied with what you’re wearing just choose to save it as a custom outfit and assign it to your horse (if desired). You can change what clothes you wear with it by following the above again while wearing the custom outfit.
That is a found hat not stolen
What are you talking about Des? I’m not sure about stolen hats, but bought hats will always be in your wardrobe…
This article isn’t accurate at all. They still don’t appear in your wardrobe, and you can still lose them easily if you don’t go out of your way to keep them by attaching them to a saved outfit, which you can only do by wearing it into the wardrobe and leaving it on as you otherwise customize your outfit.
The constantly losing hats routine is a big pain, and a rather significant miss for Rockstar, because it is a customer irritant for no good reason. This is even more true of the collectible hats than the stealable hats, but the difference between the two isn’t significant other than it’s more work to find the collectible ones.
Heck, you can’t even keep the hats you BUY at the trapper after a while, although at least you can go back to the trapper and re-equip them.
What are you talking about Des? I’m not sure how to save stolen hats but any hat you buy will always be in your wardrobe…and can always be saved to your horse…if you have it saved on your horse you can have any bought hat knocked off your and just put it back on on your horse. I once had over 10 alligator hats chilling on the ground by getting my hat knocked and putting a new one on repeatedly.
Customer irritant? LOL, so whiny.
Hats from the Trapper vendor can be located in the wardrobe; took me a while to find it myself… Imo the UI font design of the tab buttons don’t pop out to the user because the user is naturally drawn to the actual items listed on the initial “Owned [Items]” tab.
In any of the clothing category tabs (hats, vests, etc) hit R1 to cycle to “Crafted Hats”.
I stole an awesome hat from an Odriscoll, looked like a worn black panama hat. I wore it for three days, traversed half the map, went to camp, emptied horse hats, mounted, slept, saved and it still disappeared when i loaded save. Why give us the option to swap hat if we lose it as soon as we end playing session. Kinda dumb.
You guys are the real Mbps! I got this lol old lady bonnet /wig that I can finally take off lmao
you can save all hats, just go to camp delete a hat from your horse and get on the horse with the hat you want to save it will automaticly save on your horse
This doesn’t work on hats that aren’t made to be stolen. I tried it and it doesn’t work. .
thanks. I was wandering why I couldnt save hats.
Can you provide list of “steal-able” hats
So what you’re saying is is rockstar only lets steal very specific hats. That’s wonderful feature!
Wow thanks for not answering the question in your headline
Technically there wasn’t a question mark ?
Help with real advice not arguing.. How do we litterally go about saving any other than store bought hats? Step by step…

Any hats glowing can be saved. Once you wear a glowing hat it will be saved in your wardrobe. So basically click both joysticks and if the hat is glowing then it can be saved. If you want the hat just wear it and if it saves then you can keep it. Found a very rare cop hat that cannot be saved because it wasn’t glowing. The Male Hermit hat can’t be saved and it’s the closest thing to a Texas Cowboy hat you can find. But he respawns and you can kill him numerous times to steal the hat.
But a recap if you pickup the hat and wear it and it doesn’t save in your wardrobe automatically then you could never keep it. So again just wear the hat and change to your original hat then swing by somewhere that has a wardrobe and look for it.
