Super Smash Bros Ultimate Gamescom 2018 Gameplay Impressions
I had the luck to try out the upcoming Super Smash Bros Ultimate. It’s a Smash game, alright. The chaotic gameplay is there, the insane speed is there, and, of course, making other people mad is there. Of course, they’ve polished up the visuals, and there will be fighters and stages never before seen in a Smash game. It’s good stuff.
First Gameplay Impressions of Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Like with Super Mario Party, I played several matches of Super Smash Bros Ultimate with my host, as well as some other people. And, just like with Party, I had my softer bits handed to me on a platter. But, that said, I enjoyed my time playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate quite a bit. I mean, if we’re being honest, it’s Smash Bros. You know exactly what to expect. However, it’s been polished up for the Nintendo Switch, there are some new stages and fighters to keep things fresh, etc. So, let’s go into some details, shall we?
First off, some of the “juicier” stuff. The game will feature 100+ stages, and 71 fighters. Some of these are going to make their debut in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. For example, new stages will include one inspired by Splatoon. Another will have you duking it out on top of one of the towers from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There will also be fighters that have never been in a Smash game before, but you know what, I’m going to leave those a secret. It’ll be more fun if you discover them for yourself.
As for the actual gameplay, well, it’s Smash. It’s fast, it’s chaotic, and most of the time, I had no idea where my character even was. I’m not good at Smash. Anyway, I played the first couple of matches with two other players, and then one more with three. And, well, the more people are there, the more fun it gets. I tried out a different character in every match, so I ended up playing as Bayonetta, Sonic, and Little Mac. Let me just give you a piece of advice: avoid using Sonic on the Splatoon level, if you value your overall health. That said, the game plays smooth as butter, and every character I used was noticeably different. I ended up liking Little Mac best out of the bunch, turns out.
The devs have updated the visuals of the game for the new generation of Nintendo, so, I’d say that this is as good as a Smash game has ever looked. The sound design was also great, pumping adrenaline and driving you forward to smash your opponents. So, yeah, it’s a great game, just as you’d expect.
In conclusion, if you own a Switch, I think it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’re going to get your hands on Super Smash Bros Ultimate. It’s Smash on the Nintendo Switch, of course you’re going to want it. And, based on my experience, I can absolutely and wholeheartedly recommend it. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is coming out for the Nintendo Switch on December 7th 2018.
