WB Games have decided to nix microtransactions from Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. The change will take place in July, and you have until then to spend the gold that you already have. After that, there’ll be no more Gold, Market, War Chests; the whole lot will be gone. And may it never come back.

It seems that first having, and then getting rid of microtransactions in major triple-A titles is just becoming a thing. First EA, and now WB games. yes, Shadow of War is joining Battlefront 2 in the removal of microtransactions and then presumably pretending that it never happened. They’ve announced as much on the game’s community page. I don’t personally recommend anybody read it, because it’s an onslaught of corporate nonsense about “player choice”. I’m just going to compress it for you. Keep reading and prepare to wade the deep wasters.

The long and short of it is, as mentioned, that WB Games is removing microtransactions from Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. They’ll be getting rid of the ability to purchase gold on May 8th. Then, on July 17th, it’s out with Gold, War Chests, and the Market completely. Before that, you’ll be able to spend your unused gold. Any gold that you don’t get rid off will turn into in-game items. Of course, this necessitates major changes in the Shadow Wars part of the campaign. They’ll “improve it” by adding “new narrative elements and streamlined for a more cohesive experience.” If you want to keep playing Endless Siege, though, you will be able to.

That’s basically all you need to know. They’re tapping out on the microtransactions, because they’ve been “listening to your feedback and continue to update and improve the experience.” Because, you see, they just wanted to give you choice. The option to just pay to not have to play the game. Luckily, after months of people being pissed off they’ve finally realized that the microtransactions completely destroyed the Nemesis system, which used to be the core of the game. So, yeah, maybe Shadow of War is finally worth buying now.
