Sea of Thieves Upcoming Death Cost Feature Won't Charge PvP Deaths

The release notes for Sea of Thieves launch update 1.0 include an upcoming feature. It’s called Death Cost, which is exactly what it sounds like; the captain of the Ferry of the Damned will charge you a small amount of gold when you die. Players weren’t happy about this, worrying about spawn camping and the like. Fortunately, Rare has clarified that the captain won’t charge you for PvP deaths.

Sea of Thieves got a new update not long ago, and, of course, Rare has released the release notes, detailing all the new stuff they’re adding and/or fixing. There’s several bug fixes, updates, achievements, features, and so on. For the most part, it’s fairly standard fare.

However, one entry in the update caused a bit of a kerfuffle. At the very bottom of the release notes, there’s the “Coming Updates” section. The single entry there is Death Cost, a new feature that the developers want to add. How will that work? Here’s what the post says: “This new feature has the Captain of the Ferry of the Damned deduct a small gold fee when you die. Rates are dependant on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!”

Players reacted very negatively towards this. There are several reasons for this, one of which is the spawn-camping that some people have been doing. Rare has since clarified an important detail about the Death Cost: “Please note, we never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience.” So, there’s that. At least dying to another player won’t cost you money. It’s still a weird feature, but can see where they’re coming from.
